Is Pervital syrup safe for appetite increase in adults with thyroid disease? - #19991

Maryam

Hello doctor, I am an adult woman diagnosed with thyroid disease and I am currently taking medication for my thyroid. I have a poor appetite and weight loss, and I was advised to use Pervital syrup to increase appetite. I would like to know if Pervital is safe for someone with thyroid problems and if it can interact with thyroid medication. If it is not recommended, please suggest safe alternatives to improve appetite. Thank you

I’m a periodontist and academician with a strong clinical and teaching background. Over the last 4 years and 8 months, I’ve been actively involved in dental education, guiding students at multiple levels including dental hygienist, BDS, and MDS programs. Currently, I serve as a Reader at MMCDSR in Ambala, Haryana—a role that allows me to merge my academic passion with hands-on experience. Clinically, I’ve been practicing dentistry for the past 12 years. From routine procedures like scaling and root planing to more advanced cases involving grafts, biopsies, and implant surgeries. Honestly, I still find joy in doing a simple RCT when it’s needed. It’s not just about the procedure but making sure the patient feels comfortable and safe. Academically, I have 26 research publications to my credit. I’m on the editorial boards of the Archives of Dental Research and Journal of Dental Research and Oral Health, and I’ve spent a lot of time reviewing manuscripts—from case reports to meta-analyses and even book reviews. I was honored to receive the “Best Editor” award by Innovative Publications, and Athena Publications recognized me as an “excellent reviewer,” which honestly came as a bit of a surprise! In 2025, I had the opportunity to present a guest lecture in Italy on traumatic oral lesions. Sharing my work and learning from peers globally has been incredibly fulfilling. Outside academics and clinics, I’ve also worked in the pharmaceutical sector as a Drug Safety Associate for about 3 years, focusing on pharmacovigilance. That role really sharpened my attention to detail and deepened my understanding of drug interactions and adverse effects. My goal is to keep learning, and give every patient and student my absolute best.

Hello dear See as per clinical evidence there are no direct interactions However I still not recommend it because of known side-effects like drowsiness and weakness. Instead you can take mirzatepine. However dose adjustment is to be recommended by endocrinologist only. I can suggest zincovit multivitamin therapy onca a day for 1 month Hopefully your query is resolved Regards

Pervital syrup is typically used as an appetite stimulant, but when it comes to thyroid conditions, particularly if you’re on thyroid medications like levothyroxine or others, it’s essential to proceed with caution. Unfortunately, there’s limited data on how Pervital specifically might interact with thyroid medications, but similar products can occasionally influence how well your thyroid medication works. There could be a risk of impacting the absorption or metabolism of your thyroid meds, and this could potentially disrupt your thyroid balance, which is crucial to manage precisely. It’s really important to have a chat with your healthcare provider before starting Pervital or similar appetite stimulants. Now, as for safe alternatives to improve appetite, focusing on dietary modifications might be beneficial. Small, frequent meals high in protein or nutrient-dense snacks can help, and something as simple as adding flavor-enhancing herbs or spices might stimulate appetite. Nutritional shakes might also offer a dense source of calories without requiring large portions that might be daunting if your appetite is low. Physical activities, taking fresh air walks, or mild exercises can sometimes naturally increase appetite as well, coupled with stress-reducing techniques like yoga or mindfulness which can also positively affect appetite. Look into any underlying causes of appetite loss alongside your thyroid issues, and regular check-ins with your doctor to ensure your thyroid levels are stable would be key. Don’t hesitate to consult a dietitian who can work with the specific constraints and needs related to your thyroid condition to develop a sustainable eating plan.
