curd during diarrhea - #20048

Mahi

I am feeling really anxious about my stomach issues! For the past few days, I’ve been dealing with some awful diarrhea and it’s just draining me. I know everyone has their methods for handling this sorta thing, but I’ve always been told that eating curd during diarrhea can actually help. I’ve tried it in the past and thought it made a difference, but now I’m not so sure. I had this huge bowl of curd yesterday, thinking it would soothe my stomach, but I woke up in the middle of the night with more cramps. Is the curd during diarrhea really a good idea, or am I just making things worse? I mean, what are the chances my body will react different this time? Some say probiotics in curd are helpful, others think it can irritate the gut? I dunno what to think. I just want to feel better, and I keep overthinking if I should even eat it or just stick to plain rice or bananas or something. Any advice on curd during diarrhea would be super helpful!

Doctors' responses

Eating curd during diarrhea can potentially be beneficial due to the probiotics it contains, which help restore the balance of good bacteria in your gut. However, its effectiveness might vary depending on individual circumstances, such as specific underlying causes of your diarrhea or how sensitive your gut is at the moment. Curd can sometimes help reduce symptoms, but if you’re experiencing more cramps or discomfort after consuming it, it might be worth re-evaluating its use right now. If you have lactose intolerance or a specific sensitivity to dairy products, then curd could potentially irritate your gut further. In that case, opting for lactose-free probiotics or naturally fermented foods without dairy might be a better choice. While it’s usually okay to include curd in a mild way with bland elements like rice or bananas, it’s important to observe how your body responds. Staying hydrated is crucial, so consider oral rehydration solutions or electrolytes to prevent dehydration. If your diarrhea persists beyond a few days or is accompanied by troubling symptoms like severe abdominal pain, high fever, or blood in stools, it’s essential to seek medical attention promptly to rule out conditions that may require more specific treatments. Overall, be attentive to how your body reacts to certain foods and make dietary adjustments accordingly.
