metabolism slow

Pooja

I am struggling to figure out what's going on with my body lately. For the past few months, I feel like my metabolism slow for no good reason. I’m only 32 and, honestly, I’ve always been able to eat what I want without too much worry. But lately, like the past 3-4 months, I’ve noticed I’m gaining weight even when I haven’t changed my eating habits. I try to stay active—like I go to the gym and do cardio—but it seems like my metabolism slow even more. I had blood tests done, and everything came back normal, which is a little frustrating because I'm thinking maybe I have an underactive thyroid or something, right? My energy levels are all over the place too! Some days I’m tired all day, and others I feel fine. My friends are saying it’s just getting older but I don’t wanna accept that. Is there anything I can do to boost my metabolism slow or even just understand why it's happening? Anyone else feel like their metabolism slow outta nowhere? I guess I'm just looking for advice or maybe similar experiences!

Doctors' responses

If blood tests returned normal, ruling out conditions like hypothyroidism, then it’s good to consider other factors that might be affecting your metabolism. Sometimes, a change in metabolism can be linked with lifestyle factors or stress levels, and paying attention to these can potentially help slow changes. It’s not uncommon for metabolism to vary with age, diet, stress, sleep patterns, and physical activity. Though you’re actively going the gym, the type of exercise matters too—incorporating strength training can help build muscle mass, potentially increasing your resting metabolic rate, as muscles burn more calories than fat. Sleep quality is another aspect; irregular sleep schedules or insufficient sleep can impact metabolism and even lead to weight gain. Ensuring you’re getting adequate, restful sleep can surprisingly make a big difference. On the dietary front, paying attention to balance is crucial. Eating enough protein can be beneficial since it requires more energy to digest and can help with muscle maintenance as part of a varied diet. Be cautious about any medications or supplements you’re taking as some can affect metabolism as well. If your symptoms persist or worsen, a follow-up with your healthcare provider is a good idea to explore further tests or even consider a dietitian for personalized advice. Meanwhile, maintain a balanced approach and remember that lifestyle tweaks can often have a noticeable impact over time.
