to remove pimple marks - #20136

Manvi

I am really struggling with these stubborn pimple marks on my face. A few months ago, I had a pretty nasty breakout that left me with these dark spots that just won’t fade away. I used to have clear skin, and now I feel like I’m stuck with this reminder of my teenage acne, ugh! I’ve tried a bunch of over-the-counter creams and those scrubs that say they’re meant to help to remove pimple marks, but honestly, it feels like they’re doing nothing. I even went to a dermatologist who recommended some topical treatments, but I'm not seeing results like I hoped. Has anyone experienced something similar? Do any specific products actually work to remove pimple marks? I keep reading about things like vitamin C serums and retinoids, but I’m just scared they might irritate my skin even more. I keep thinking, what do I really need to do to remove these pimple marks for good? Time feels like it's standing still here. Trying to avoid harsh treatments since my skin can be sensitive. Any suggestions from people who've actually dealt with this would be great!

Doctors' responses

Tackling persistent pimple marks can be frustrating, especially when you have sensitive skin and need to avoid harsher treatments. From what you’ve shared, it seems like you’ve already made some good steps like seeing a dermatologist and trying various over-the-counter options, yet the results haven’t been as fast as you’d like. It’s important to set realistic expectations with treating post-acne marks, as this process can take some time due to skin’s natural healing cycle. One effective approach for reducing pimple marks, while keeping your sensitive skin in mind, is to incorporate a few key active ingredients carefully into your routine. Vitamin C, as you mentioned, is a great start; it’s a potent antioxidant that helps even out skin tone and promote collagen production, which assists in fading dark marks. Start with a low concentration, like 5-10%, to see how your skin responds, applying it once a day in the morning for daily protection against oxidative stress. Retinoids are another powerful option that encourage skin cell turnover. They come in various strengths; for sensitive skin, a mild over-the-counter retinol might do the trick. Begin by applying it at night, a couple of times a week, to minimize irritation and gradually increase frequency as tolerated. To further protect and enhance the effects of these treatments, diligent use of sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily is crucial, especially since UV exposure can worsen hyperpigmentation. Additionally, using a gentle, hydrating moisturizer can help maintain your skin barrier integrity, buffering against potential irritation from active ingredients. Avoid scrubs or harsh exfoliants if they have been causing irritation, as these can compromise skin barrier and exacerbate sensitivity. Patience is your best ally, along with consistency in your skincare routine. If you feel like progress is minimal despite these efforts, consider revisiting your dermatologist; they might explore other in-clinic treatments like chemical peels or laser, which can be customized to suit different skin sensitivities and may accelerate results. It’s reasonable to anticipate some improvement within a few months, but full resolution may take longer, so hang in there and keep an open communication with your healthcare provider about your progress.
