what are the symptoms of pcod and pcos - #20151

Aditya

I am really confused and kinda scared about my health lately. I’ve been noticing some weird changes in my body and honestly, I don’t know what to make of them. This started a few months ago when I began experiencing irregular periods, like they were all over the place — sometimes missing for a couple of months, then coming back super heavy. I heard about this condition called PCOD and PCOS, and I can’t help but wonder what are the symptoms of PCOD and PCOS that I should be looking for? I've had some acne flare-ups, which I never really dealt with before, and I’ve noticed my weight sorta creeping up, even though I’m not eating that much different? Also, my hair feels thinner, which is freaking me out, like why is this happening?? I’m not sure if all these symptoms are connected, but my mood swings are all over last month, too, getting angry or sad way too easily. Friends mentioned I might have PCOS or maybe something like PCOD because of all these symptoms. But what are the symptoms of PCOD and PCOS really? Should I be worried? And how can I even find out if that's what I have? Hoping someone can help because I feel lost in all of this!

PCOD (Polycystic Ovarian Disease) and PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) share quite a few overlapping symptoms and are often associated with hormonal imbalances in women. To clarify, PCOS is the more frequently used term in the medical community, encompassing a spectrum of symptoms and potential complications. What you’ve described does align with common signs of PCOS, which often include irregular menstrual cycles, such as those unpredictable and heavy periods you’re experiencing. Acne flare-ups and thinning hair can result from elevated levels of androgens, which are male hormones that can be increased in PCOS. Weight gain is another symptom that is often noted, sometimes accompanied by difficulty losing weight. Mood swings and emotional disturbances can also occur due to hormonal shifts or the stress of managing these symptoms. The presence of multiple small cysts on the ovaries is typically identified via an ultrasound as part of the diagnostic process for PCOS. It’s important to discuss these symptoms with a healthcare provider who can assess your overall health through clinical examination and possibly some tests. They may recommend checking hormone levels, insulin resistance, and conducting an ultrasound to look at your ovaries. Management takes a tailored approach, often involving lifestyle modification such as diet and exercise, which helps with weight control and in managing insulin resistance. Medications can also be prescribed to regulate menstrual cycles, manage acne or hair growth. If you’re experiencing severe symptoms or significant distress, seek medical advice promptly to address your concerns comprehensively. Remember, early diagnosis and intervention can help manage symptoms effectively and reduce the risk of long-term complications.
