can we drink lemon water in loose motion - #20202

Raghav

I am really confused about this whole lemon water thing. Last week, I had this sudden bout of loose motions! Like, it was really bad. I thought it was food poisoning at first, but then my stomach settled down a bit. I’ve been trying to hydrate well but also looking into home remedies. I heard some people say that lemon water can be helpful for digestion, but like, is that actually true when someone is experiencing loose motion? Can we drink lemon water in loose motion? I mean, I love lemon water normally, like, it’s so refreshing! But now I'm not sure if it makes things worse with all that citric acid stuff. I've tried plain water and even ginger tea, which helped a little, but I keep wondering if I can sip on lemon water in loose motion or if it’ll just make my stomach more upset. My cousin said it might even help with the cleansing, but that feels a bit risky too! Has anyone here dealt with this? What did you do? Can we drink lemon water in loose motion, or should I just steer clear of citrus for a bit? Just want to make sure I’m doing the right thing here, ya know?

Doctors’ responses

Lemon water can be a bit of a mixed bag when you’re dealing with loose motions. On one hand, lemons contain vitamin C and can be hydrating, which is beneficial when your body’s losing fluids. That said, the citric acid can irritate your digestive tract a bit, especially when it’s already sensitive. So, it’s not necessarily going to solve your digestion issue, and in some cases, might aggravate the situation for certain people. If you’re experiencing loose motion due to a mild digestive upset, sticking to plain fluids like water, oral rehydration solutions, or herbal teas without caffeine is usually a safer bet to maintain hydration. Focus on replacing the lost electrolytes; that’s crucial during episodes of diarrhea. As for lemon water, if you’re used to consuming it regularly without any issues, you might try a dilute version (just a few drops in water) and see how you feel. But if there’s any hesitation, or if symptoms like abdominal cramping worsen, it’s wise to hold off. Meanwhile, watch for red flag symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, blood in stools, fever, or severe dehydration signs like dizziness, and seek medical attention if these occur. Alongside hydration, eating a bland diet, like plain rice, bananas, and toast (often referred to as the BRAT diet) can help ease irritation and give your gut some time to recover. If symptoms persist or you’re dealing with recurring digestive upsets, consulting a healthcare provider to rule out infections or other underlying issues is a good step.
