dry skin patches on face - #20449

Keya

I am dealing with some really annoying dry skin patches on my face, and it's driving me crazy! Last month, I noticed a couple of rough spots near my cheeks, and now they’ve spread to my forehead. I tried using a new moisturizer, thinking that might help, but it just made it worse. When I looked in the mirror, I could see these really flaky areas, like, ugh! I also noticed that the skin around my eyes is getting super tight, like, it feels uncomfortable and just doesn't look right. I don’t know if it could be some allergy, but I don’t remember changing anything in my skincare routine. I’ve been using the same products for months, and I usually don’t have issues. I even tried doing some home remedies like coconut oil and aloe vera, but nope, nothin seems to work. I feel kind of embarrassed too, because people have started asking if I’m okay or if I’m sick. Has anyone here had dry skin patches on face that just won’t budge? What did you do? Like, should I see a dermatologist, or can I fix this myself? I just want my normal skin back, you know? Please help!

Doctors' responses

Dry skin patches on your face can be really uncomfortable and concerning, and given that your usual skincare products haven’t changed, it’s worth considering a few possible causes and solutions. Firstly, environmental changes—such as colder weather or lower humidity—can contribute to dry skin situations. Also, consider the water hardness at home. The fact that a new moisturizer worsened the situation might suggest an ingredient issue; some products have components like fragrances or alcohol that can irritate sensitive skin further or cause allergy-like reactions even if nothing has changed recently in your regimen. Instead of heavy or oil-based products, you might want to go for a hypoallergenic, fragrance-free cream that’s specifically designed for sensitive or dry skin, ideally with ceramides or hyaluronic acid to retain moisture. Be mindful about over-washing or using hot water, both of which can strip natural oils and worsen dryness. Integrating a humidifier into your routine could combat environmental dryness. While you’ve tried coconut oil, which works for some, it can clog pores for others—so if that was the case, consider a patch test before a consistent use. Additionally, if the skin around your eyes is tight and uncomfortable, it might indicate a systemic issue, like thyroid-related problems if combined with other symptoms, or contact dermatitis due to exposure to a new material or allergen. If no home remedies seem to be working and the condition is worsening or accompanied by symptoms like severe peeling, redness, or a rash, seeing a dermatologist would be prudent. They can rule out conditions like eczema, psoriasis, or dermatitis and recommend appropriate treatments like steroid creams or antihistamines if allergic reactions are suspected. It’s also good to review your diet for hydrating foods rich in omega fatty acids and ensure you’re hydrated as dehydration can exacerbate dry skin. Lastly, don’t use too many exfoliators or scrubs frequently, thinking they’ll eliminate dry patches, as they can further irritate your skin. Keep it gentle and moisturize well. If all else fails, and there’s significant discomfort or rapid changes, professional medical advice is always the best course of action.
