how to remove face darkness - #21796

Mahi

I am really frustrated because I've been dealing with this face darkness for a while now. It all started a few months ago when I noticed some dark patches on my cheeks and forehead. I've tried a ton of products, like creams and scrubs, but nothing seems to work! It’s like no matter what I do, the face darkness just sticks around. I even changed my skincare routine to something more gentle, thinking maybe that might help, but nah, still facing the same issue. I did some online research and found out about exfoliation and using vitamin C serums, but I dunno how effective they really are. Has anyone had success in helping with face darkness? Also, I can’t tell if I need to see a dermatologist for this or just keep trying different over-the-counter stuff. I heard that sun exposure can cause more darkening, so I've been using sunscreen like crazy, but still, this face darkness is making me worried! Anyone have tips or treatments that worked for them? I'm all ears for any advice on how to remove face darkness effectively!

Doctors' responses

To address face darkness, particularly dark patches on the cheeks and forehead, it’s crucial to understand the potential causes as these could range from hyperpigmentation and melasma to even post-inflammatory changes due to acne. Since you mentioned you’ve tried various products without success, you may want to focus on some medically-backed approaches. Vitamin C serums can indeed be beneficial, given their antioxidant properties that help to brighten the skin by reducing melanin production—applying a few drops in the morning before sunscreen could be worthwhile. However, results could take few weeks to be noticeable, so consistency is key. Moreover, exfoliating can be helpful, but it’s important not to overdo it, as aggressive exfoliating can worsen pigmentation. Consider gentle chemical exfoliants with alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) about once or twice a week to promote cell turnover. Your concern about sun exposure is valid, as UV rays exacerbate pigmentation. Continue using broad-spectrum sunscreen, at least SPF 30, daily and reapply every two hours if you’re outdoors for extended periods. Regarding if you should see a dermatologist, it can be wise if your face darkness persists despite over-the-counter efforts, or if you notice any rapid changes in the patches. They can offer prescription-strength treatments like retinoids or professional options like chemical peels and laser therapy, which shouldn’t be tried without professional guidance. Remember, while it’s natural to want rapid results, de-pigmenting treatments often require patience and a consistent regimen. If there’s underlying anxiety about these changes, a professional can also reassure you about the next steps tailored to your specific condition.
