pcos symptoms and causes

Sara

I am kinda freaking out and need some advice. For the past few months, I’ve been dealing with these weird issues that I can't shake off. I’ve done some digging into pcos symptoms and causes because my periods are totally irregular — like, sometimes I’ll go months without one, and then they’ll hit me like a freight train. I also noticed I’ve been gaining weight in places that just don’t make sense, plus my face has been breaking out like I’m a teenager again! Seriously, what gives?? I read about pcos symptoms and causes online, and now I’m worried it might be that. Also, I’ve had some mood swings, which is not like me at all. I asked my doctor if it could be hormones or something, and they just brushed it off saying it’s normal for women to have weird periods sometimes. But I can’t help but think there’s more to it with these pcos symptoms and causes. Has anyone else dealt with this? Should I push my doctor for more tests or something? I’m a bit confused, scared, and honestly, just want to feel like myself again. Any advice on what I should do, or what I might be missing?

Doctors' responses

Irregular periods, weight gain, and acne are indeed common symptoms associated with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and your concern is perfectly valid. PCOS is a hormonal disorder where the ovaries produce excessive amounts of male hormones (androgens), leading to symptoms like yours. However, while this is a possibility, it’s important to consider other conditions that could also cause similar symptoms. You should definitely bring up these concerns to your doctor again and discuss the possibility of PCOS. Request specific tests like hormonal blood work, which could include testosterone and DHEAS levels to evaluate androgen levels, and possibly an ultrasound to visualize the ovaries for any cysts, a common indicator of PCOS. Make sure to mention the mood swings as well, as hormonal imbalances can also affect mood. Avoid using harsh acne treatments without guidance, as they might worsen the condition; a dermatologist can suggest suitable options. Lifestyle factors like diet and physical activity play a crucial role in managing PCOS symptoms. Integrating regular exercise into your routine and focusing on a balanced diet with low-glycemic foods can help manage insulin levels and potentially alleviate symptoms. If you’re feeling like your concerns aren’t being properly addressed, consider seeking a second opinion from another healthcare professional, as feeling understood and having a clear diagnosis is important for your peace of mind and overall wellbeing.
