best alcohol to drink with uti - #21869

Priya

I am trying to figure out what’s the best alcohol to drink with UTI because I feel like I really messed up this week. Last weekend, I went out with some friends and had a couple of cocktails, kinda forgot about my ongoing UTI, ugh. My doctor warned about irritants, but honestly, I didn’t think it’d be that big of a deal. Now, I’m back to feeling all those burning sensations and constant need to pee again. I’ve been reading a bit online and came across discussions about the best alcohol to drink with UTI, but it’s confusing. Some say clear spirits like vodka are better, while others mention that any alcohol could just make it worse. Is there really a best alcohol to drink with UTI, or should I just avoid drinking altogether? I know hydration is super important, but what if I wanna enjoy a social outing? I don’t want to feel left out! Anyone found something that works, like the best alcohol to drink with UTI that won't totally wreck the healing? I’m seriously at a loss here and would love any personal experiences or advice. Thanks!

There isn’t really a “best” alcohol to drink when you have a UTI, unfortunately. The reality is that all types of alcohol can potentially irritate the bladder and exacerbate UTI symptoms, due to their diuretic effect which can lead to dehydration and increase the concentration of irritating substances in the urine. While dehydration is a major factor that can worsen symptoms, alcohol itself is an irritant to the bladder, which is obviously not ideal when you’re trying to recover from a UTI. Besides, alcohol can interfere with the effectiveness of antibiotics if you’re on them, or if your UTI becomes more severe and requires medication.

It’s crucial to hydrate with water to help flush bacteria out of your system, reduce irritation, and aid in recovery. You should ideally consume 8-10 glasses of water per day. If you’re thinking of socializing, perhaps consider non-alcoholic options like mocktails — many bars offer creative and delicious non-alcoholic drinks that can still be fun to hold and sip. Alternatively, drinks like sparkling water with a splash of cranberry juice might also be a better choice; cranberry has been traditionally associated with bladder health, but it should be noted that while cranberry products can prevent UTIs, they don’t treat active infections.

If your UTI symptoms persist or worsen, it’s a good idea to consult with your healthcare provider. They can offer personalized advice or evaluate if there’s an underlying issue that needs addressing. Sometimes, lifestyle adjustments, temporary though they are, play a crucial role in recovery and preventing future occurrences. Remember, prioritizing your health should always come first.
