can i eat curd rice during loose motion - #21990

Arush

I am dealing with this annoying issue of loose motion for the past couple of days, and it’s really messing up my plans. I mean, one minute I’m feeling fine, and the next, I’m in the restroom! My diet has gone haywire since then, and all I want is something simple that won’t upset my stomach even more. I keep hearing about how curd rice is supposed to be gentle on the stomach because of the cooling effect of curd and how rice can help in binding things up. But, I just wanna know, can I eat curd rice during loose motion? Like, should I have just plain curd or add some rice to it? And what about spices? I usually like it with some seasoning, but now I’m worried any little thing could trigger my stomach again. I had a friend recommend it saying curd rice is great for recovery, but then I read mixed things online. Some say it’s okay while others suggest avoiding dairy during loose motions? Ugh, I’m confused! Should I stick to only plain rice or is the curd really okay with it? Any advice would really help, like, fast before I go crazy with this tummy trouble!

Doctors' responses

Yes, curd rice can be eaten during loose motions, and there are a few reasons why it might be beneficial. The probiotics in curd can help to restore the balance of gut bacteria, which is often disrupted during episodes of diarrhea. Rice, being a starchy carbohydrate, is generally easy to digest and can help add bulk to the stool. Eating them together often provides a simple, soothing meal that doesn’t overly tax your digestive system. However, there are a few considerations you should keep in mind.

First, while curd provides probiotics, it’s still a dairy product, and for some people, dairy might exacerbate diarrhea. If you notice any worsening in your symptoms after consuming curd or other dairy, it would be best to stop eating it for the time being. Furthermore, when preparing curd rice, avoid adding spices, oils, or anything else that could irritate your digestive tract. Spicy foods, onions, and excessive oils can increase the frequency of loose stools in some cases, so sticking to plain curd and rice is advisable.

Hydration is critical. Diarrhea can lead to fluid and electrolyte loss, so remember to drink plenty of fluids, possibly supplemented with oral rehydration solutions if you’re noticing symptoms like fatigue or lightheadedness. Avoid caffeinated or sugary drinks as they can draw water into the intestines and worsen diarrhea. Keeping stress low and ensuring adequate rest will support your recovery.

If your symptoms persist for more than a few days, or if you experience severe pain, blood in your stool, or signs of dehydration, such as decreased urination or dizziness, you should seek medical attention promptly. Such symptoms might indicate a need for further evaluation to rule out infections or other gastrointestinal issues.
