is milk good for loose motion - #22036

Zoya

I am really worried about this loose motion I’ve been having for the past few days. It started after I ate some street food that didn't sit right, ugh, you know how that goes. I’ve been trying to stay hydrated but honestly, I feel weak and can't keep anything in. A friend mentioned that is milk good for loose motion? I mean, I always thought milk is supposed to be a good source of nutrition and stuff, but now I’m wondering if it's the right thing to drink when my stomach is... well, let's just say not being friendly. I've read online that dairy can sometimes make things worse in these situations, but I also heard some people say that is milk good for loose motion since it can help with soothing an upset stomach. It's confusing because I’ve seen mixed info. I've tried some yogurt before, and it helped but then there’s milk which I've been a bit hesitant about. Should I be drinking milk or avoiding it? What do you all think? Is milk good for loose motion or should I stick to other remedies?

Doctors' responses

In cases of loose motion or diarrhea, consuming milk may not be the best idea, especially if your digestive system is already sensitive or irritated. When you have diarrhea, your gut lining can become inflamed and the enzymes needed to digest lactose, a sugar found in milk, may not function efficiently. This can lead to lactose intolerance even in people who normally digest milk without issues, leading to further gastrointestinal distress. So, drinking milk could potentially make diarrhea worse. Instead, focusing on staying hydrated is key. Oral rehydration solutions or drinks containing electrolytes can help maintain necessary fluid balance. Plain water is good, but it’s also important to replenish any lost salts. You mentioned trying yogurt, which can be beneficial since it contains probiotics. These probiotics are live bacteria that can help restore the balance of good bacteria in your gut. Banana, rice, applesauce, and toast (often referred to as the BRAT diet) are typically recommended in such situations, as they are gentle on the stomach and can help firm up stools. Pay attention to any other symptoms you might be experiencing. If your loose motions persist for more than a couple of days, become accompanied by severe pain, fever, or blood in your stool, seeking medical attention is crucial. It’s important to address not just the symptoms but also the underlying cause of your condition. If you suspect any food poisoning or infection, consulting with a healthcare professional can be helpful in obtaining appropriate treatment.
