when does pregnancy acne start

Khushi

I am really confused about this pregnancy acne thing! I mean, I've read that when does pregnancy acne start can vary a lot, but I'm not sure when to expect it. I'm about 8 weeks along and just last week I started seeing these little bumps pop up on my forehead, which is super unusual for me. I’ve never had acne like this before! It’s kinda freaking me out, because I thought I was past those teenage years! I talked to my friend who just had a baby, and she said her struggle with acne didn’t happen until later on, but I can't help but wonder if mine is from hormonal changes or stress or something else. I haven't changed my skincare routine or anything like that. Is this normal at this early stage? When does pregnancy acne start for most people? I mean, am I going to have to deal with this throughout my pregnancy, or is it just a temporary thing? I’ve been trying to figure out what to do to clear it up, but nothing seems to work yet. Any advice or personal experiences to share? Thank you!

Pregnancy acne is a surprisingly common occurrence, and yes, it does happen due to hormonal changes, specifically the increase in androgens that can occur in the first trimester. These hormones can cause the skin to produce more sebum, which is an oily substance that can block pores and lead to acne. It’s not unusual for pregnancy acne to start as early as the first trimester, around the 6th to 8th week, so what you’re experiencing falls within the expected timeline. The onset and severity can vary widely among individuals. For some, acne may clear up after the first trimester, while others might find it persists throughout the pregnancy. Managing pregnancy acne can be a bit tricky since some acne treatments contain ingredients that are best avoided during pregnancy. It’s important to steer clear of products with retinoids and high doses of salicylic acid. Instead, consider using a gentle cleanser that’s suitable for sensitive skin. Topical treatments containing low concentrations of azelaic acid or glycolic acid are generally considered safe but, of course, it’s crucial to consult your healthcare provider before starting any new skincare regimen. Keeping your skin clean without over-washing, managing stress, staying hydrated, and eating a balanced diet can also help mitigate breakouts. If you’re finding the acne particularly stubborn or bothersome, it’s worthwhile to speak with a dermatologist who has experience working with pregnant patients. They can offer more specific guidance suited to your condition while prioritizing the safety of your pregnancy. Although it’s a little frustrating, your body is going through many changes, and this phase should be temporary.
