why periods late - #22381

Ira

I am really confused and worried because my periods late and it’s been over a week. I normally have pretty regular cycles, like clockwork, but last month, I had this weird stress thing happen when my boss was on my case at work. I thought for sure that’s why periods late but nope, just still waiting for it to show up! I took a pregnancy test just to rule that out, but it was negative. It's just odd because I’m usually right on time. Last month was super busy and I did miss some workouts but I didn’t think that’d mess with my cycle like this. I've heard people say things like stress or diet changes can mess with your period but I thought that was just talk! Q-tips (I mean, I mean, quick comment) I did start taking some new supplements for my energy. Wonder if that could be it? Is there like a list of reasons why periods late might happen? Like, should I be concerned or is this just one of those things that happens sometimes? I’m kinda worried though, what should I look out for?

Stress can indeed impact your menstrual cycle, so it’s reasonable to consider that the recent stress at work might be a factor. When you’re under stress, your body can produce more of the hormone cortisol, which can interfere with the pituitary gland in your brain that tells your ovaries to ovulate. If ovulation is delayed, your period can be late. Aside from stress, lifestyle changes like altered physical activity and diet also affect hormones, and missing regular workouts could play a part, although less likely so dramatically. New supplements may also impact your cycle, especially if they contain ingredients like adaptogens or hormones. Checking with a healthcare professional about the supplements’ ingredients can provide clarity. Beyond lifestyle factors, other reasons for a late period might include significant weight changes, thyroid dysfunction, or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). It might be worth consulting with your doctor, especially if the delay continues or if any other symptoms crop up. Look out for unusual symptoms like sudden weight changes, extreme fatigue, or any new pain, which should be evaluated more swiftly. That being said, it’s not uncommon to have a random cycle variation. If it is just a one-off irregularity and no new alarming symptoms are present, it’s often not a cause for concern. Keeping track of your cycle and any new symptoms for a few months could help your healthcare provider see patterns if this occurs again.
