sugarcane juice is heat or cold for body - #23211

Raghav

I am super confused about this whole sugarcane juice thing. Last week, I went to this local market and saw fresh sugarcane juice. I remember someone telling me that sugarcane juice is heat or cold for body, but like, I can’t remember which! I drank a lot of it, and then I felt a bit, I don’t know, overloaded maybe? The weather's been kinda hot lately too. My friends say sugarcane juice is heat for body and should be avoided in summer, but others are swearing by it for hydration. I’ve also read somewhere that sugarcane juice can be really cooling, right? So now I’m really second guessing myself. That evening when I had it, it was nice going down but then my stomach felt a little off. I’ve always thought sugarcane juice must be good for you since it’s natural and all, but this whole heat or cold for body thing is messing with my mind! Like, why do people say different things? Am I gonna be okay if I have more sugarcane juice? What do you guys really think — is sugarcane juice heat or cold for body? Help!!!

Doctors' responses

Sugarcane juice is generally considered cooling for the body. In many traditional health systems, such as Ayurveda, sugarcane juice is thought of as having cooling properties. This is partly due to its high water content, which can help with hydration, especially in hot weather. It contains simple sugars which can provide a quick burst of energy, but drinking a lot in one go might lead to a sugar rush or an upset stomach, especially if your body isn’t used to processing that amount of sugar quickly. This might be why you felt a bit off after consuming a large quantity. Different people react differently, and while it’s generally considered beneficial for hydration and cooling, individual responses may vary.

Your friends’ views might stem from the idea that sugarcane juice can provide a lot of energy quickly, which some interpret as “heating,” but this isn’t grounded in physiological effects well understood by medical science. In moderation, sugarcane juice can be a nutritious drink contributing to hydration alongside other essential functions. However, if you have conditions like diabetes or are sensitive to sugar spikes, you’ll want to keep an eye on how much you consume.

Remember that your overall diet, health, and existing conditions factor into how your body responds to any food or drink. If you’re ever unsure about how something affects you physically, it’s a good idea to keep track of how you feel after consuming it. If you’re experiencing frequent or severe symptoms, it’s advisable to consult with a healthcare provider to ensure there’s nothing more significant underlying your symptoms. Just as with any other food or drink, moderation is typically the key. Keep your body’s needs in mind, and consider speaking with a professional if you have ongoing concerns or persistent symptoms. Drink it cool, not ice cold, as super cold drinks can sometimes upset your stomach more than help with cooling.
