how to treat pigmentation around mouth - #23392

Janvi

I am really struggling with pigmentation around my mouth. It's been getting worse over the past few months. I noticed it started after I tried some new skincare products that were supposed to help with my skin tone. At first, my skin felt smooth and nice, but then I started to see these dark spots forming around my mouth, which just freaking freak me out. It just looks really uneven and I feel super self conscious about it. I’ve done some research on how to treat pigmentation around mouth but I'm feeling overwhelmed – there's just so much info out there. Some say to use vitamin C serums, while others recommend laser treatments, but I'm not even sure where to start! LOL. Also, do things like sun exposure make it worse?? I don’t spend tons of time in the sun, but I've heard UV rays can mess with pigmentation. My friends say I should just embrace it, but I really want to know how to treat pigmentation around mouth effectively. Any tips or advice from you doctors would be amazing, like what actually works?? Anyone had similar issues? Would love to hear your experiences or any specific products you recommend. Thanks in advance for any help!

Dealing with pigmentation around the mouth can indeed be a frustrating experience, especially when it’s linked to new skincare products. The first step I’d recommend is to discontinue any products that might be causing irritation or contributing to hyperpigmentation. Ingredients like fragrance, certain acids, or even some preservatives can sometimes trigger pigmentation, leading to conditions like post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). Stick to gentle, fragrance-free products for now. Protecting your skin from sun exposure is crucial, as UV rays can definitely worsen pigmentation. Make sure to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily, even on cloudy days or if you’re indoors near windows, because UV rays can penetrate glass. Consider using physical blockers like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which are less likely to irritate sensitive skin. To address the pigmentation, incorporating a topical vitamin C serum might be beneficial because it can help with brightening and evening out skin tone. Another option is niacinamide, which has anti-inflammatory properties and can also help reduce pigmentation. However, if you’re considering treatments like lasers, it’s best to consult with a dermatologist, who can assess your skin type and suggest safe, effective modalities tailored to your specific needs. While professional treatments can be highly effective, they usually require a tailored approach to avoid further complications. Meanwhile, moisturize regularly to maintain your skin barrier. Hydration aids the natural healing process and minimizes irritation. It’s a good idea to patch-test new products on a less noticeable area before using them on your face. If these measures don’t help or if the condition worsens, seeking a dermatologist’s opinion would be the next logical step. They can help determine if there’s an underlying condition such as melasma or eczema contributing to your symptoms.
