Doctors' responses

Helo Anna,

Can you please tell which medication is proscribed at the end ? And what are her co-morbidities.

The combination of her advanced age, a recent serious infection, complete immobility, and failure of initial treatment is a major red flag. The most urgent priority is to rule out a Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

With regards

Persistent swelling in your mother’s feet after cellulitis may suggest underlying circulation, kidney, or heart-related issues rather than simple water retention. Since tablets have not reduced the swelling, further tests like kidney function, heart evaluation, and Doppler scan of the legs may be required. Please consult a physician or cardiologist for proper evaluation and treatment.

Persistent swelling in the feet after cellulitis could be due to venous insufficiency, kidney/heart issues, or lymphatic blockage rather than just water retention. At her age, untreated swelling can worsen mobility and increase risk of complications. Please consult a physician or cardiologist for proper evaluation and treatment.

Persistent swelling and inability to walk in your mother’s situation suggests a need for further evaluation. Despite successful treatment of the cellulitis, the unresolved swelling may indicate underlying issues such as chronic venous insufficiency, lymphedema, or possibly fluid retention due to heart, kidney or liver issues. It is crucial to review her overall health, history, and potential comorbidities. An assessment of her cardiovascular and renal function might be needed, especially considering her age. If the prescribed diuretics haven’t helped, it’s important to contact her healthcare provider for follow-up. They might recommend tests like an ultrasound to check for deep vein thrombosis, or other imaging to better understand the cause of the swelling. Encourage her to elevate her feet above the level of the heart when sitting or lying down to promote fluid drainage, and avoid standing still for extended periods if she can. Compression stockings might also be considered, but ensure there’s no contraindication given her specific conditions. Watch for any signs of infection, increased pain, or if the swelling worsens, which should prompt immediate medical attention. Staying hydrated can sometimes help with fluid balance, as long as she doesn’t have any contraindicating health issues. Ongoing follow-up with her healthcare provider will be essential to address this problem safely and effectively.
