is it good to apply aloe vera on face overnight - #20972
I am really curious about this whole aloe vera thing. I've heard a bunch of people say “is it good to apply aloe vera on face overnight?”, but I’m kinda torn. Last week I had this weird sunburn from a beach trip, and my skin was super dry and peeling. A friend told me to try aloe vera, saying it works wonders for skin...I mean, if it’s good to apply aloe vera on face overnight, wouldn’t it just make it better right? So I tried it, slathered it all over my face before bed, right? But the next morning, my skin felt a bit greasy and, idk, not fresh like I thought it would. I’m worried maybe I overdid it? Or is it that maybe aloe vera isn’t right for my skin type? Also, I noticed some redness on my cheeks after using it a couple of nights. Is that normal? Like, can someone tell me if is it good to apply aloe vera on face overnight for sensitive skin, specifically? I am all for natural stuff, but I don’t wanna mess my face up more than it already is. Have other people had these issues too or is this just me? Should I stop using it or give it more time? Thx!

Doctors' responses
Applying aloe vera on your face overnight can be beneficial for some, but it isn’t universally right for everyone. For instance, aloe vera is known for its hydrating and anti-inflammatory properties which can be great for soothing sunburns and dry skin. However, if you have sensitive skin, it’s possible to experience irritation or an allergic reaction, which might explain the redness and greasiness you encountered. This could mean your skin isn’t tolerating it well, especially if left on overnight. It’s important to do a patch test before using any new product extensively—apply a small amount to your inner arm and wait 24-48 hours to see if any reaction occurs.
If your skin is dry and peeling from the sunburn, aloe vera might help to lock in moisture, but don’t forget to pair it with a gentle moisturizer suited for sensitive skin to restore the skin barrier function. Limiting the use to daytime or washing it off after about 15-20 minutes rather than keeping it overnight might help prevent those greasy and red sensations. Since everyone’s skin reacts differently, observe how your skin responds over a few uses. If irritation continues, it would be wise to discontinue use and consult a dermatologist, as they can provide guidance tailored to your specific skin type and concerns. Also, be sure to protect and nourish your skin post-sun exposure with proper SPF and hydration practices to avoid future sunburns.
