boiling water burn scar - #21051

Divya

I am really worried about this boiling water burn scar on my arm. A few weeks ago, I accidentally spilled boiling water while cooking, and it was such a dumb mistake! At first, it really hurt and was super red, but now I see this ugly brownish mark where the burn was. I've been trying to keep it clean and moisturized, but I can't stop worrying if this boiling water burn scar is going to be permanent. I mean, I've heard stories about people getting scars from burns, and it just freaks me out! Is there anything I can do to help it heal better? Should I be using specific ointments or creams for a boiling water burn scar? I’m just not sure if I’m doing the right thing. Also, I feel like every time I go outside, I'm super self-conscious about it! Just wondering if other people have experience with boiling water burn scars and what helped them? Like do I need to see a doctor or can I just manage it at home? Just looking for any tips or advice from you guys! Thanks!

For a burn like the one you’ve described, it’s critical to focus on proper care to support healing and minimize scarring. Since several weeks have passed, your focus should be on promoting skin repair and protecting the area. Keeping the area moisturized is a good start. Use a fragrance-free moisturizer or aloe vera gel several times a day. Silicone-based gels or sheets are also popular for scar management because they can help flatten and fade scars over time. These can be found over-the-counter at most drugstores. Sun protection is essential—UV exposure can darken a scar permanently. When you’re outside, apply sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) to the scarred area, even if the weather is cloudy. Now, for ointments, consider using products that contain onion extract (like Mederma) as some studies suggest they can improve appearance. If the scar is red, raised, or itchy and these home measures don’t seem to help after a few months, a consultation with a dermatologist could be beneficial. They might offer options like laser therapy or steroid injections if deemed necessary. Continue to monitor for signs of infection such as increased pain, redness, swelling, or pus. In such cases, a prompt visit to a healthcare provider is recommended. If you’re self-conscious, try lightweight clothing that covers the area without irritating the skin while it heals. Lastly, if you find your anxiety about the scar is impacting your daily life, seeking support from a medical professional for emotional reassurance might be worthwhile.
