what happens if we drink beetroot juice daily - #22926

Meera

I am really curious about what happens if we drink beetroot juice daily. Ughh, a few months ago I started feeling super tired all the time, like no matter how much sleep I got, I just never felt energized. I read somewhere that beetroot juice can help with stamina and energy levels, so I decided to give it a shot. At first, I was just having it like a shot in the morning, and honestly, I thought it tasted kinda weird, but I got used to it. After a week or so, I noticed I felt better, but then I read other stuff that contradicted that. Some say drinking beetroot juice daily can drop your blood pressure, and then I freaked out cause mine's already on the lower side. What happens if we drink beetroot juice daily for weeks? Like, does it even matter how much? And should I be worried about the color change in my pee? That was super weird at first! Do I need to balance it with something else? I’ve also been working out a bit, and wondering if that’s why I felt more energetic or if the juice really did something. Can drinking beetroot juice daily become too much of a good thing? Have any of you all noticed side effects? Would love some input!!

Doctors' responses

Drinking beetroot juice daily can have several effects on your body, and it’s no surprise why there’s a mix of opinions about it. Beetroot juice is known for being rich in nitrates, which can improve blood flow, possibly leading to increased stamina and improved exercise performance. That’s probably why you noticed an energy boost initially, especially with your new exercise routine. However, the relationship between beetroot juice and blood pressure is significant. It can indeed lower blood pressure due to the dilation of blood vessels, thanks to those nitrates. Since your blood pressure is already on the lower side, it’s wise to monitor it regularly if you continue drinking beetroot juice daily. Gradually cutting back or balancing with other foods might be necessary if you notice drops in your blood pressure. Regarding the color change in your urine, that’s a common and harmless side effect known as beeturia. It’s just the pigments in the beetroot; not everyone experiences this, but it’s typically nothing to worry about. As for how much beetroot juice you should consume, moderation is key. Excessive amounts could lead to issues like digestive disturbances or an excessive dip in blood pressure for some. Including a variety of fruits and vegetables in your diet is always beneficial to ensure you’re getting a balanced nutrient intake. Overall, if you’re noticing positive effects without any adverse ones, continue enjoying it, but keep an eye on how your body responds, particularly with your specific blood pressure concerns. If in doubt, or if you notice any unusual symptoms or changes, a quick chat with a healthcare professional would be the prudent course of action.
