can multani mitti be used daily - #23839

Arnav

I am really curious about this whole multani mitti thing! I recently started using it after my friend raved about how great it was for her skin. I have oily skin, and I noticed that my face tends to get shiny and break out if I don’t do anything about it. So I thought, why not give this a try? Anyway, I used it for the first time last week and was amazed at how fresh my face felt afterwards, but now I’m wondering, can multani mitti be used daily? I saw some articles online that said it could be harsh if used too often, while others claimed daily use is fine. My skin can be super sensitive, like it reacts to everything, so I’m kinda worried if I should apply it every day or maybe stick to a few times a week. Also, I read that mixing it with other ingredients could help but didn’t see much about daily use. How do all you lovely docs feel about this? Can multani mitti be used daily, or is that a big no-no for sensitive skin? Should I test it out? Or what’s the best way to incorporate it into my routine? Just tryna keep my skin clear and glowing. Thanks!

Doctors' responses

Considering your concern about whether multani mitti, also known as Fuller’s earth, can be used daily, it’s important to weigh its effects on the skin, especially since you mention having oily yet sensitive skin. Multani mitti is known for its oil-absorbing and cooling properties, which can work wonders for oily skin by helping control excess sebum production. However, daily use may indeed be too harsh, particularly for sensitive skin, as it may strip natural oils and lead to dryness or irritation. For individuals with sensitive skin like yours, using multani mitti two to three times a week is generally more advisable. This frequency balances the benefits of oil control without over-drying or irritating the skin. When you incorporate it into your routine, consider mixing it with soothing ingredients like rose water, which can add a calming effect, or a small amount of honey, which has moisturizing properties. Keep an eye on any signals your skin might send—redness, dryness, or increased sensitivity could indicate that you should reduce usage or switch to other gentle alternatives. Always patch test any new mixture on a small area of your skin to ensure you don’t have an adverse reaction. If your skin reacts negatively, it may be best to discontinue use entirely. As always, complementing topical treatments with an adequate skincare regime and a healthy lifestyle can contribute positively towards maintaining clear, glowing skin. If irritation persists or you have concerns about other skin issues, consulting with a dermatologist for personalized advice would be a prudent step.
