which food is good for cold and cough - #23905

Yash

I am trying to recover from this really annoying cold and cough that just won’t go away. Like, I thought it was just a little sniffle a few days ago, but now my throat feels scratchy and I keep coughing, ugh. I read somewhere that certain foods can help, but I'm not sure what exactly to eat. I mean, I just want to know which food is good for cold and cough! Is chicken soup really that effective or is it just an old wives tale? On top of that, I've been drinking tons of hot tea but I’m not sure if that actually helps either. I've heard that honey can be soothing, but can anyone tell me which food is good for cold and cough beyond just honey and soup? Maybe something that tastes good too, because let’s be real I’m tired of bland stuff. Should I be thinking about things like ginger or garlic? I’ve been hearing those mentioned a lot but it all feels overwhelming. Any other suggestions or recipes that actually work? Really hope to kick this cold soon, any advice would be super appreciated!

Chicken soup does indeed have some merit when it comes to helping with cold and cough symptoms. While it’s not a cure, the warm liquid can help soothe a sore throat, ease congestion, and possibly even reduce inflammation. The warmth of the soup helps to clear nasal passages and the light nourishment can boost your energy levels. Including garlic in your chicken soup can add an immune-boosting kick due to its natural antibacterial and antiviral properties. For your throat, honey can provide relief since it has a natural soothing effect and can help suppress coughs. Try adding a spoonful to warm tea or lemon water.

Ginger is another excellent choice; it can ease a cough or sore throat while having anti-inflammatory properties. You can make ginger tea by grating fresh ginger into hot water and letting it steep, then add honey and lemon for added benefits. Beyond that, spicy foods like chilies and hot peppers might seem surprising, but they can help clear your sinuses thanks to their capsaicin content. Yoghurt, rich in probiotics, may help your immune system, while citrus fruits like oranges and lemons provide vitamin C. Avoid foods dairy and sugar-heavy products as they can sometimes thicken mucus, worsening congestion. Focus on hydrating well—broths, herbal teas, and plenty of water can help. If your symptoms persist beyond a couple of weeks or you develop more severe symptoms, visiting a healthcare provider for further evaluation and treatment is important.
