what does chlamydia smell like - #25984

Ishaan

I am kinda freaking out right now. A few weeks ago I noticed some unusual symptoms, like pain when urinating and a bit of discharge. I thought it was just a UTI but after seeing a doc, they said it might be chlamydia and did a test, which I’m still waiting for. While I’m trying to stay calm, I can’t help but wonder what does chlamydia smell like? Like, am I supposed to have a weird scent? I remember reading somewhere that some infections can cause changes in odor, but it's not super clear on chlamydia specifically. I honestly thought it might just smell "bad" but now I’m worried. My partner’s been feeling fine, no visible symptoms, and I'm terrified I messed things up. What does chlamydia smell like, if it even has a distinct smell? I’ve been googling things and finding mixed answers, which is driving me crazy! One article said it can have a fishy odor, but another said that may just be other infections. Can smells help identify what I'm dealing with? Should I be checking for any other signs? Really hope it’s not something worse, but the waiting on these test results is just horrible!

Doctors' responses

Chlamydia typically doesn’t have a distinct smell or any odour associated with it, which is why it can sometimes be tricky to identify without testing. The symptoms you’re describing, like pain when urinating and discharge, are indeed consistent with chlamydia, but these can also overlap with other infections, such as bacterial vaginosis or trichomoniasis, which might result. in a stronger or fishy smell. Your concern about odour is understandable, but it’s often not the main indicator for chlamydia itself. Instead, focus on the other symptoms you’re experiencing, like the pain and discharge, and make sure you follow-up on the test results. These will provide a more clear diagnosis. It’s good to hear your partner is asymptomatic, but it’s worth noting that chlamydia can be asymptomatic in some individuals, which means someone can carry and transmit the infection without showing any signs. Once your test results are back, if chlamydia is confirmed, your doctor can prescribe antibiotics and it’s crucial for both you and your partner to get treated to prevent re-infection. Meanwhile, avoid any new sexual contact and inform any recent partners so they can also get tested. It’s normal to feel anxious while waiting for test results but rest assured that treatment for chlamydia is highly effective and straightforward. If your symptoms worsen or you notice new symptoms like severe pain or fever, contact your healthcare provider for further guidance.
