does syphilis go away - #26263
I am really concerned about my health right now because I've been having some strange symptoms. I started noticing these sores a few weeks ago, and they were super mild at first, just thought they were like canker sores or something. But they got worse and now I have a rash that’s kinda itchy and burning, and I can’t shake this weird feeling in my stomach. I finally went to get tested and found out I have syphilis. I have no idea how I contracted it, but I do remember having unprotected sex about a month or so ago. I guess that’s when it all started? Anyway, I know there are treatments, and my doc said that it's usually treatable, which is a relief. But, well, does syphilis go away completely with treatment? Like is it something that can just clear up, or will I deal with this forever? I’ve heard mixed things online about it and I'm freaking out a little. Does syphilis go away or is it more complicated than that? My doctor prescribed me penicillin and said to hold off on any sexual activity for a bit, but like… will I be okay in the long run? I really just want to be done with this and not have to worry about it again.

Doctors' responses
Syphilis is indeed a treatable infection, and it’s good that you’re already in touch with your doctor and have started treatment. With the correct use of antibiotics, specifically penicillin, syphilis can be effectively cured, especially if diagnosed and treated in the early stages. After treatment, the sores and rash should begin to heal relatively quickly, often within a few weeks. However, follow-up blood tests are usually necessary to ensure that the infection has been completely eradicated. Without proper treatment, it could progress to more serious health issues, affecting your heart or nervous system, even though this is uncommon when treatment is started quickly. Adhering strictly to your doctor’s advice, like avoiding sexual activity until you’re cleared, is crucial to prevent spreading or re-infection.
Feeling confused or anxious about conflicting information online is valid, but rest assured that modern antibiotics are highly effective against syphilis. Once the infection is cleared, it won’t come back unless you’re exposed to it again, so being cautious in future sexual encounters is important to reduce risks. If you have concerns about your test results or symptoms not going away, scheduling follow-up appointments with your healthcare provider can be beneficial. This ensures the effectiveness of the treatment and addresses any lingering doubts or symptoms. In terms of lifestyle adjustments, maintaining open communication with any partners is essential for their safety and potentially getting them tested too. Remember, the earlier it’s treated; the faster you can return to feeling like yourself.
