what happens if i miss my thyroid medication one day

Shaurya

I am really worried about what happens if I miss my thyroid medication one day. I have hypothyroidism and I take Levothyroxine daily. Last week, I was super busy and totally forgot my dose. I didn't think much of it at first but then I started feeling kinda off, like more fatigued than usual and my mood was a bit all over the place, which is why I started the meds in the first place. I tried to do some googling, but it just made me more confused! Some websites say it's no big deal, but others freaked me out saying I could feel a big slump in my energy levels or my symptoms could come roaring back. I’ve got a pretty packed schedule this week, so the thought of being out of sorts freaks me out! I just wonder, like, is missing one day that big of a deal? What happens if I miss my thyroid medication one day? Do I need to take a double dose the next day or just keep it regular? I don’t wanna mess up my hormones even more. Any advice on what to do?? Thanks!

Doctors' responses

Missing your thyroid medication for one day is generally not a major cause for concern, especially with hypothyroidism and levothyroxine. Your body has a storage of thyroid hormones, so one missed day won’t immediately lead to significant symptoms or a hormone imbalance. Some people might not notice any changes, while others, like yourself, might feel a bit fatigued or have mood changes, but these are usually mild and temporary. It’s essential, however, to keep your medication routine consistent, as thyroid hormones play a crucial role in your body’s metabolism and energy regulation.

When it comes to dealing with a missed dose, do not double up on your medication the next day. That could lead to excessive thyroid hormone levels, which isn’t advisable. Instead, as soon as you remember it, just take your next dose at its regular time. For those using weekly pill organizers, this can help prevent missing doses in the future by integrating medication intake into your daily routine.

If missing doses becomes a frequent issue or if you have any concerns about symptoms, it might be worth talking to your healthcare provider to ensure your treatment is optimal and to rule out any underlying issues that could be affecting your thyroid function or medication absorption. It’s also important that your medication is taken on an empty stomach, usually 30-60 minutes before food, to ensure proper absorption. Keep an eye on changes to your symptoms or anything that feels significantly different, and always communicate with your provider any ongoing issues or concerns.
