Doctors’ responses

Creatine is a popular supplement used to enhance performance in strength training, and many athletes consider adding it to their regimen. However, with a condition like splenomegaly, or an enlarged spleen, it’s crucial to be cautious with any supplements you consider. While creatine is generally considered safe for most individuals when taken in proper doses, the presence of splenomegaly makes the situation more delicate. Splenomegaly often results from underlying conditions like infections, liver disease, or blood disorders, and these could influence how your body processes supplements. Creatine primarily affects muscle and water stores, and there’s limited research directly linking creatine to adverse effects on the spleen. Yet, because it can affect how fluid is distributed in the body and may impact kidney function, it’s important to consult with your healthcare provider before introducing it to your routine. They can assess whether your specific condition would make creatine use riskier. As for whey protein, it’s a source of protein that might be safer to start with, provided your diet otherwise supports it and there’s no underlying kidney dysfunction or other contraindications. Your doctor could also help you check liver and kidney functions if those are the potential concerns with your splenomegaly. Before taking any supplement, consider what you hope to gain from it and whether it’s essential alongside your balanced diet and regular exercise. Safety comes first, especially when there’s an underlying condition involved, so getting personalized medical advice in your context is a good first move.
