How to remove dark spots caused by pimples cream - #11983

Rashi

I am really struggling with these dark spots caused by pimples cream! A few months ago, I started using a new acne treatment, thinking it would help clear up my skin faster. Well, it did work for my pimples but now I have these annoying dark spots all over my face. It’s kinda frustrating because I was hoping to get clearer skin, not more issues! I’ve read some stuff online about how to remove dark spots caused by pimples cream, but honestly, it all just seems overwhelming. I tried some over-the-counter creams supposedly for dark spots, but nothing seems to be working. A friend told me to just give it time, but that’s easier said than done when you look in the mirror and see this mess! I think it's maybe a mix of irritation from the cream and some post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation too? Is there any fast way or effective treatment for how to remove dark spots caused by pimples cream? I just want my skin back to normal. Any tips or suggestions from you doctors would help a lot. Do many people deal with this? I feel like I’m alone in this situation.

Doctors’ responses

Dark spots after using acne treatment are a common issue, usually stemming from post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). These spots can occur when the skin experiences inflammation due to an acne lesion or an irritating product like a new acne cream. PIH is especially common in individuals with darker skin tones and can certainly be frustrating to manage. There are, however, several strategies you can consider to help reduce these dark spots over time. First, patience is indeed necessary because PIH can take several weeks to months to fade, depending on your skin type and the severity of the spots. For faster results, try using topical treatments that include ingredients like hydroquinone, which can help lighten hyperpigmented areas. You might also consider products containing ingredients like niacinamide, vitamin C, glycolic acid, or retinoids, as they are known for their skin-brightening and skin-evening properties. However, be cautious as these products can be irritating, especially if used together with other active acne treatments. Use them gradually to see how your skin responds. Always incorporate a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 into your skincare routine, as exposure to the sun can worsen hyperpigmentation. Wearing sunscreen daily prevents spots from getting darker and assists in the healing process. In more persistent cases, seeing a dermatologist could be an option where treatments like chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or laser therapy might be recommended. Many people face these challenges, so you’re definitely not alone. Remember, consistency in your routine is key, and do consult with a dermatologist to tailor the treatment best suited for your skin.
