what is gutka - #22835

Hriday

I am really confused about this gutka stuff. My friend mentioned it the other day, and I was like, what is gutka? I thought maybe it was a snack or something, but then they started explaining how people actually chew it and the health risks involved. Turns out it's this smokeless tobacco product that combines areca nut, betel leaves, and flavored stuff. I mean, I didn't know people are using it so much! My uncle used to chew gutka all the time, and now he's dealing with some serious health issues – like mouth ulcers and even issues with his gums. That got me worried. I tried to ask him, what is gutka exactly, and why does it seem so addictive? Is it just the flavor, or is there something else? A couple of my friends also tried it at a party and said it gave them a rush but felt terrible afterward. Like, why do people still use it if it can lead to all these problems? I feel like I need some expert opinions here! What is gutka doing to our health in the long run? Can it really cause cancer like they say? I’ve been trying to get more info, but it’s such a mixed bag.

Doctors' responses

Gutka is indeed a smokeless tobacco product that combines areca nut, tobacco, slaked lime, catechu, and flavoring agents, typically wrapped in betel leaves. It is popular in some parts of Asia and among certain diaspora communities. The combination is typically chewed for its stimulating effects, which largely come from nicotine in the tobacco component. It’s the nicotine that contributes to the addictive nature of gutka, much like other tobacco products. The use of gutka poses several serious health risks. One of the most significant concerns is its potential to cause oral cancers. The carcinogenic risk comes from both the tobacco and the areca nut itself, which is classified as a carcinogen. Regular use can also lead to conditions like leukoplakia and submucous fibrosis, which are precursors to cancer. In addition to cancer, gutka use is associated with gum disease, tooth decay, and other oral health issues, such as mouth ulcers and gum recession. It’s not just about the immediate effects like the rush; the long-term consequences can be severe. Those who chew gutka may also experience digestive issues, cardiovascular problems, and increased risk of addiction related health concerns. If someone is using gutka, it’s highly advisable to consider stopping, as the risks outweigh any temporary pleasurable effects it might provide. Professional help can be invaluable in quitting, given its addictive nature. Oral screenings and regular check-ups with healthcare providers are crucial for users to catch any potential problems early. Overall, the best course of action is to avoid gutka and seek healthier ways to cope with stress or seek stimulation. If your uncle or any friends are still using it, they might want to discuss the situation openly with a healthcare professional who can provide specific guidance and support.
