can i leave flaxseed gel overnight on hair - #24671

Krishna

I am really confused about this whole flaxseed gel thing for my hair. I started using it like a month ago after seeing so many good reviews, but I'm not sure if I'm doing it right. Last week, I left flaxseed gel overnight on my hair thinking it would give me extra moisture, but I woke up with some sticky, crunchy locks!! Is that normal?? Like, can I leave flaxseed gel overnight on hair or should I rinse it out sooner? I just assumed the longer, the better but maybe that was a mistake. Sometimes I wonder if I’m using too much gel, or if my hair just doesn't react well to it. I really wanna know the proper way to use this stuff. Should I only leave flaxseed gel on for a few hours or is overnight okay? I read that it has lots of benefits, but if I'm left with messy hair, is it even worth it? I don’t wanna ruin my hair! Also, does anyone else experience this or am I totally off track? I'm just trying to get those nice, defined curls I've been chasing. Would love any advice on this!

Doctors' responses

Leaving flaxseed gel in your hair overnight can sometimes lead to that sticky or crunchy texture you’re describing, mainly because the gel might be too concentrated or maybe not fully absorbed overnight. Typically, flaxseed gel is used to help with definition and moisturizing curls, but it is generally rinsed out after a few hours. Leaving it in overnight isn’t harmful per se, but it can result in product buildup and might not provide the benefits you are looking for. It’s possible that your hair doesn’t absorb the gel effectively within that time, or maybe just too much gel was applied for an overnight duration. You might want to try leaving it in for a shorter period first, a few hours perhaps, and observe how your hair responds. Consider using a small amount and evenly distributing it through damp hair for more effective absorption. Also, experimenting with the amount can also help in managing the texture outcome. If you’re striving for defined curls, this could be more about how you layer other products in conjunction with flaxseed gel, like leave-in conditioners or curl creams. Also, every hair type reacts differently, so it could be beneficial to explore different methods that other users with your hair type have found success with. If your goal is more about hydration, general hair health practices like regular conditioning, occasional deep conditioning treatments, and reducing heat styling may further enhance your curl definition without leaving unwanted residue.
