how to use gua sha - #25511

Dhruv

I am really curious about how to use gua sha. Like, I stumbled upon it while scrolling through social media and honestly, everyone seems to be raving about how amazing it is for the skin. My friend tried it and said her face looks so much brighter after just a couple of weeks. But I’ve got no clue where to start. I bought one of those jade stones a few days ago, but I’m kinda uncertain on how to use gua sha properly. Do I need to prep my skin in a special way? Should I apply any oils or serums first? And how long should I be using it for? I tried it once without any oil and it felt scratchy, ugh! Plus, I’ve heard you're supposed to pull the skin in certain directions. I don't wanna mess it up! Also, how often do I need to do this, like every day? Does gua sha help with things like puffiness or fine lines? I guess I just want to make sure I get the most benefit out of it, but it’s all a bit overwhelming. I mean, I saw some videos, but they feel kinda quick, and I'm not sure if I missed any key tips or tricks. Any advice on how to use gua sha would be super helpful! Thank you!

Gua sha is a traditional Chinese technique often used in both facial and body treatments to promote circulation and relieve tension. When it comes to using a gua sha tool on your face, it’s important to start with clean skin to maximize its benefits. Begin with a gentle cleanser to remove any impurities, then follow up with a light layer of oil or serum. This will help the gua sha tool glide smoothly across your skin, reducing the likelihood of irritation. Choose a facial oil or serum that complements your skin type — for example, argan oil for dry skin or jojoba oil for more oily skin types.

When using the tool, hold it at a 15-degree angle to your face; this means it’s almost flat against the skin, with just enough tilt for it to glide. Work your way outward and upward, starting from the center of your face. Pay attention to specific areas like the eyebrows, under the eyes, cheekbones, and jawline. Use gentle pressure and be cautious around sensitive areas, especially under the eyes. The same with all skincare, go easy and avoid overdoing it. Generally, sessions can be anywhere from 3 to 10 minutes, depending on your routine and schedule. Many people find benefit from using it 3-4 times a week, but you can adapt that based on how your skin responds. Regular use is said to help improve blood circulation, reduce puffiness, and might offer some tightening effect, though the change might be subtle and vary from person to person.

It’s important to remember that gua sha is generally safe but should not hurt or cause any bruising on the face. If so, you’re applying too much pressure. While it can be a fun addition to your skincare routine, it’s not a substitute for medically-proven treatments if you’re dealing with more serious skin concerns, and should complement your usual skincare practices. If you’re uncertain or experience any irritation, it may be wise to consult with a dermatologist to ensure it aligns with your skincare needs, especially if you have any underlying skin conditions.
