Doctors’ responses

Dandruff is often caused by a condition called seborrheic dermatitis, which is particularly common in cold, dry weather. What you’re experiencing is not unusual; the flaky scalp and itching can indeed be frustrating. Since the home remedies like coconut oil and lemon haven’t worked for you, I’d suggest switching to a medicated anti-dandruff shampoo containing active ingredients such as zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide, ketoconazole, or coal tar. These shampoos are more effective in reducing the fungal growth on the scalp that can contribute to dandruff. You might need to experiment with a few to find which works best for you. Use it twice a week, leaving it in your hair for about 5 minutes before rinsing thoroughly. Avoid excessive scalp scratching as this can worsen irritation. Consider spacing out hair washes to every other day if you’re washing it daily, as overwashing can sometimes exacerbate dryness. Ensure you’re managing stress well, as it can trigger dandruff flare-ups, and maintain a balanced diet with adequate hydration. If you notice symptoms worsening, such as intense itching, redness, or patches extending to the face or body, it might be beneficial to consult with a healthcare professional. Sometimes, persistent dandruff could be a symptom of a more underlying condition that requires targeted treatment. Staying mindful of potential triggers and being consistent with treatment can often help keep it in check.
