can we use camphor in hair oil - #25066

Parth

I am really curious about something that's been on my mind lately. A few weeks ago, my aunt was raving about this natural remedy she swears by, and it has to do with camphor. She says camphor has amazing benefits for hair, especially when mixed with hair oil. Like, she mentioned that camphor can help with hair growth and controlling dandruff. I've been struggling with hair fall, and it's super frustrating! I thought maybe camphor could be a solution, but I’m kind of hesitant. Can we use camphor in hair oil? I mean, is it safe? I read that it can be potent and might cause skin irritation if not used right. I'm confused because I also find people promoting aromatic uses for it, not just on hair. Has anyone here actually used camphor in hair oil? Did it really help? What ratio should I mix it with? And how do I apply it without risking irritation? I really want my hair to look good! Just thinking about it makes me anxious. Any tips or personal experiences would be super helpful!

Doctors' responses

Yes, you can use camphor in hair oil, but with some care and caution. Camphor can provide certain benefits due to its antifungal and antimicrobial properties, which may help with dandruff control. It’s also believed by some to improve circulation to the scalp, potentially promoting hair growth. However, it’s important to address the concerns you raised about safety. Camphor is indeed potent and, if used improperly, can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions. To mitigate this, you must dilute the camphor well. Typically, a small amount, such as a pinch of camphor powder or a few drops if using camphor oil, should be mixed with a carrier oil like coconut or olive oil. A common method is to use no more than half a teaspoon of camphor in about 100ml of carrier oil. Always do a patch test on a small skin area first to check for any adverse reaction. Apply the mixture to conditioned hair, focusing on the scalp and gently massaging it in, then leave it for about half an hour before rinsing thoroughly with a mild shampoo. It’s best to use this treatment no more than once or twice a week to avoid skin sensitivity. Additionally, if you experience any irritation or burning, discontinue use immediately. Hair issues like hair fall can sometimes indicate underlying health conditions or nutritional deficiencies, so if the problem persists, consult with a healthcare provider for a comprehensive evaluation.
