Doctors’ responses

To tackle acne marks and pigmentation, it’s essential to address the primary causes and consider a multifaceted approach. Firstly, for acne scarring, topical treatments like those containing retinoids (tretinoin or adapalene) may help in promoting skin cell turnover and reducing the appearance of marks. Over-the-counter products with niacinamide can also assist in evening out skin tone and improving texture. Regarding pigmentation, consistent use of broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 is crucial to protect the skin from further hyperpigmentation. Ingredients like glycolic acid or azelaic acid found in creams or gels can be effective in lightening dark spots over time. If over-the-counter options aren’t effective, consulting with a dermatologist could provide access to stronger prescription formulations or procedures like chemical peels or laser therapy that target deeper pigmentation. Since you’re experiencing itching and burning, it’s important to rule out any irritation or potential allergic reaction to products you might be using. Avoid using harsh scrubs or physical exfoliants as they can worsen irritation. Moisturizing regularly with a non-comedogenic formula can help soothe and hydrate your skin. Ensure you’re drinking enough water and integrating a balanced diet rich in antioxidants, as this can support overall skin health from the inside. If symptoms persist or worsen, a medical evaluation may be necessary to exclude underlying conditions that might need specific attention.
