lemon side effects on face - #13338

Drishti

I am super confused and a bit worried about using lemon on my face. I read somewhere that lemon can be great for skin, like brightening and all that, but I'm honestly not sure what the lemon side effects on face could be. A couple of weeks ago, I decided to try a homemade face mask with lemon juice because I wanted to lighten some dark spots. At first, it felt really fresh and nice, but then I noticed my skin got kinda red and itchy afterwards. I remember reading that lemon can be irritating, but I thought maybe that was just for people with super sensitive skin? Mine has always been pretty normal, just the occasional breakout. Then I started noticing drying patches and I'm thinking, are these lemon side effects on face what I should expect? Should I really be using it at all? It's just so frustrating because my friend swears by lemon and says it's the best. Should I stop using it entirely, or can I still use it mixed with something else to avoid these lemon side effects on face? Like, am I doing something wrong? Also, do most people really have negative reactions or is it just a few cases? Help!

Using lemon juice on the face is indeed a popular home remedy, often touted for it’s skin-brightening properties, primarily due to the vitamin C content. However, there are several potential side effects you might experience, especially skin irritation and increased sensitivity. Lemon juice is quite acidic, so it’s not uncommon for it to cause redness, burning, itching, or dryness, even if you don’t have particularly sensitive skin. This acidity can disrupt your skin’s natural pH balance and protective barrier, leading to those dry patches and heightened reactivity.

Many people experience these kinds of side effects with lemon, so you’re definitely not alone. It tends to be more problematic for those with dry or sensitive skin, but anyone can react if they’re applying the lemon undiluted or leaving it on for too long. Also, lemon juice makes your skin more photosensitive, increasing the risk of sunburn when you have exposure to sunlight shortly after application. Mixing lemon juice with other ingredients, like honey or yogurt, might reduce irritation but isn’t guaranteed to prevent it.

It’s best to stop using the juice if it’s causing irritation. Instead, consider alternative methods with proven tolerability, such as over-the-counter products containing vitamin C that are formulated for facial skin. A good skincare routine focusing on hydration and sun protection can help manage dark spots too. Using a gentle cleanser, non-comedogenic moisturizer, and daily sunscreen can also provide benefits without risking adverse reactions. If you’re uncertain or still facing issues, consulting a dermatologist for personalized advice would be a wise step.
