fever patient food - #16023

Aadhya

I am feeling really stressed out lately. My son, who's only 7, just came down with a fever. It started last night outta nowhere, he was fine in the afternoon but by evening he had this crazy fever. We took him to the doctor and they said it's probably just a viral thing, which is good. But it’s like, what do I feed him, ya know? The nurse mentioned something about fever patient food but didn’t really give us much detail. He usually loves his pasta, but now all he wants is plain toast or crackers. I’m worried he’s not getting enough nutrients or hydration or something. Should I be pushing the fever patient food idea, or is it okay if he just nibbles on what he wants? I’ve tried making some broth but he wasn’t interested at all, said it was too hot (not literally hot, I mean spicy). He can’t tolerate anything too strong either, so I’m at a loss here! Should I focus more on keeping him hydrated or is the fever patient food like soups and stuff actually important? Ugh, I’m feeling kinda lost and I know I’m overthinking but it’s like, I just wanna do the best for my little guy. Any advice would be super helpful!

Doctors’ responses

When you’re dealing with a fever, especially in kids, it’s pretty normal for their appetite to decrease, so stressing about it can be natural but try to focus on maintaining hydration more than worrying about solid food intake for now. Offering him plenty of fluids is key. Water, oral rehydration solutions, or even diluted fruit juices are good options, as they can keep him hydrated and also provide some electrolytes and glucose to help maintain energy levels. If he’s open to it, even popsicles can be a refreshing way to keep fluids up. The concept behind “fever patient food” really focuses on bland, easy-to-digest options that don’t require much effort for the body to break down. Foods like plain toast, crackers, or rice are okay, and sometimes a small amount of pasta might be comforting for him. Nutrient-rich foods such as fruits like bananas or applesauce, if he’ll eat them, are good choices too. If he’s avoiding soups because they seem ‘too spicy’ but you feel they might be a helpful part of his diet, try a very mild, non-spicy clear broth—something with little to no added seasoning might be more palatable for him. Basically, don’t worry too much if he’s temporarily off his regular food. Appetite usually returns as the fever subsides. However, if he seems unusually lethargic, isn’t drinking enough, or if his fever persists for more than a couple days, it’d be a good idea to check back in with his healthcare provider. This scenario is not uncommon in viral illnesses, so keeping a watch on his symptoms and ensuring he gets ample fluid will make a difference until his body bounces back.
