Monthold baby does not lift his head during tummy time - #29173
I am really worried because my monthold baby does not lift his head during tummy time. I read that babies typically start lifting their heads by now, but mine just lays there, kinda looking around or even sometimes gets fussy like he doesn't want to be on his tummy. I try to encourage him with toys and making silly faces, but nothing seems to work! My cousin told me that her baby was lifting his head at this age, and I'm suddenly freaking out, thinking maybe there's something wrong?? Is it common for a monthold baby to not lift his head? I keep reading about milestones for babies this age and of course, it gets me more anxious... Like just yesterday, I laid him on his belly and he just turned his head to the side. Is that normal too? He seems to move his arms and legs fine during tummy time, just no lift on the head! Should I be doing more to help him or is this something that most babies go through? I don’t wanna end up overthinking it but I’m just not sure if there’s a reason to be worried about my monthold baby not lifting his head yet. Any advice or experiences would really help, thanks!

It’s quite natural to have concerns about your baby’s developmental milestones, and you’re not alone in feeling this way. At one month old, not all babies are lifting their heads consistently during tummy time. Each baby develops at their own pace, and while some may begin to lift their heads by now, others may take a little more time to build the necessary strength and coordination. The head turning to the side during tummy time is normal and shows that your baby is engaging their neck muscles, which is an important part of development. Since he’s moving his arms and legs, these are good signs of active engagement. Encouraging tummy time in short, supervised intervals will help him gradually build up the strength he needs to start lifting his head more regularly. You could try placing a rolled towel under his chest to give him some elevation, making it a little easier or use a mirror to grab his attention. Consistency and patience are key. While your cousin’s baby might have reached this milestone earlier, variations in development are entirely normal. If your baby does not show any progression over the next few weeks or you notice other issues, it would be reasonable to discuss your concerns with your pediatrician to rule out any underlying conditions. They can provide personalized advice that considers your baby’s overall health and development. But generally, at this age, not lifting the head during tummy time on its own is not commonly a sign of a serious problem. If you’re ever worried, seeking reassurance and guidance from a healthcare professional is a sound step. Keep supporting your baby’s tummy time as a part of their daily routine, but there’s no need to worry excessively at this early stage.
