home remedy for loose motion in babies - #17999

Ishaan

I am really worried about my little one. My baby is just 10 months old and has been having loose motions for the last two days. It started after I introduced a new fruit puree. The doctor said it could be a mild stomach bug or just a reaction, but they mentioned trying a home remedy for loose motion in babies might help ease things. I've been thinking, what could be safe and effective as a home remedy for loose motion in babies? I read about some suggestions online, like giving rice water or banana but I'm not sure how much is appropriate. Also, I feel kinda lost because my baby is getting fussy, and I don't want to make it worse with incorrect remedies. Has anyone had a similar experience? Like, how long did it take for the loose motions to stop after you used a home remedy for loose motion in babies? I’ve tried keeping my baby hydrated and giving small sips of apple juice too, but honestly, I’m a bit panicky. Any advice on safe home remedies or tips would be really appreciated. Just hoping for something that works since the pediatrician seems to think it’ll just run its course, but as a mom, I want to do everything I can to help my baby feel better!

Doctors' responses

When dealing with loose motions in babies, it’s important to focus on keeping them well-hydrated and nourished while their digestive system settles down. Since your baby is only 10 months old, sensitivity to new foods can indeed trigger an upset tummy, and it sounds like your doctor may be right about it possibly being a mild stomach bug. A few simple home remedies can potentially help ease the symptoms, but remember that if things seem to worsen, seeing a healthcare professional is key. First, ensure your baby stays hydrated. Offer small sips of an oral rehydration solution (ORS) which is balanced in electrolytess and minerals, crucial for maintaining hydration levels. While homemade rice water can be soothing, it shouldn’t replace ORS. You can make rice water by boiling rice with more water than normal until soft and then draining the excess liquid; offer small sips of this cooled liquid a couple of times a day. This helps bind stools somewhat. Be cautious with fruits; banana may be binding and safe when mashed, yet introduce it slowly. Stick to 2–3 tablespoons at first, monitoring for any changes. Apple juice in moderate amounts is okay, though excessive juice might make it worse. It’s normal for these episodes to last a few days, so patience, safe hydration, and nutrition adjustments are your best aides. This doesn’t replace seeing your pediatrician if symptoms persist or if there’s blood in stools, signs of dehydration (such as sunken eyes, dry mouth, lethargy), or high fever. Always prioritize medical advice when unsure.
