how many days does viral fever last - #18258

Krishna

I am really worried about my son, he's been sick for the past few days, and I just don't know how many days does viral fever last. It all started last week when he came home from school with a slight fever. At first, I thought it was just a common cold or something, you know? But then the fever spiked to 102°F and he was complaining about all this body ache and chills. I took him to the doctor, and they just said to keep him hydrated and monitor his temp, not much help honestly. I read online that viral fevers can last from a few days to over a week, but here I am thinking, how many days does viral fever last for a 10-year-old? I feel like I’m in this loop of worry. He seems so lethargic, barely eating, and honestly, it’s hard to see him like this. I've given him some over-the-counter meds, but it's hard to see improvements. Every time I check his temperature, I hope to see it lower, but then it creeps up again. How many days does viral fever last usually? Should I be worried if it hits a week? Or is there time when I need to take him back to the doctor? Please help!

Doctors' responses

Viral fevers in children usually last between 3 to 5 days, though in some cases they can extend up to a week or 10 days, depending on the specific virus involved. It can vary by individual since each child’s immune response differs. Given your son has been experiencing symptoms for about a week and his fever has already subsided and returned, it’s a good indication to follow up with your healthcare provider if persistence continues or if new symptoms arise. Besides fever and body aches, prolonged symptoms like fatigue or lack of appetite that you’ve described are relatively common but if they persist, it’s worth reassessment. Pay particular attention to red flags like difficulty breathing, severe headaches, confusion, or unrelenting vomiting, as these may signal a need for more urgent care.

Make sure he continues to stay well-hydrated by offering fluids frequently, even if it’s just small sips, and maintain a simple diet with easily digestible foods until his appetite improves. Regularly monitor his temperature and give him acetaminophen or ibuprofen as recommended, ensuring you’re following the correct dosage for his age and weight. If his fever exceeds 104°F (40°C) or doesn’t reduce with meds, consult your doctor again promptly, as it might indicate complications or another underlying condition that needs to be addressed. In the absence of alarming symptoms, give him the chance to rest as much as he needs—his body is working hard to fight off the infection. If his condition improves but new symptoms arise, don’t hesitate to seek clarification or further advice from a healthcare professional.
