during cough what to eat - #23607

Saanvi

I am really struggling here and could use some advice. A few days ago, I caught this nasty cough. It's not just the cough tho; I also feel kinda weak and tired. My throat feels scratchy, and I keep wondering what to eat during cough to feel better. I tried chicken soup, but honestly, I just don’t have the appetite. Like, every time I start to eat, my throat just feels worse, and then I end up coughing more. Last night, I drank some warm tea with honey, which helped a bit, but now I’m back to thinking about what to eat during cough that won't irritate my throat even more. Is there a certain food that's good during this? I mean, I keep hearing about soothing foods like bananas and maybe some oatmeal, but are they even effective? Can I eat cold stuff or should I stick with warm foods? I’m worried about not eating enough and making this cough linger longer than it should! I hope this goes away soon, any suggestions on what to eat during cough would be super helpful!

Doctors' responses

When dealing with a cough, especially if it’s making you feel weak and tired, it’s important to focus on foods that won’t irritate your throat and can provide some comfort and nutrition. You’ve tried chicken soup and warm tea with honey, which are both good choices as they can soothe the throat and offer hydration. You mentioned bananas and oatmeal, which are indeed gentle on the throat; they’re soft, easy to swallow, and won’t likely trigger more coughing. To further ease throat discomfort, you can try incorporating broths or soups that are low in salt to avoid irritation. Warm fluids are generally more comforting than cold, so stick with teas and broths rather than cold beverages. Milk and dairy products can sometimes thicken mucus for some people, which might worsen a cough for certain individuals, but this isn’t universal. So it’s worth observing if dairy affects you. Fruits like ripe bananas and applesauce can be easy to digest and soothing as well. If eating is challenging due to lack of appetite, consider nutrient-dense smoothies. Blend fruits with a liquid base like almond milk or coconut water to help with hydration and nutrition. If these soft foods aren’t improving how you feel and if symptoms persist beyond a week, new symptoms develop like a high fever, or if your cough becomes more severe or productive of discolored sputum, it would be wise to seek medical evaluation. This allows for assessing whether there’s an underlying infection or another cause needing targeted treatment. Staying hydrated is crucial, so keep up with drinking fluids even more when you’re not feeling like eating. Rest is also very important, so give your body time to recover. If your condition doesn’t improve or gets worse, seeing a healthcare provider for further assessment would be necessary to rule out conditions like a bacterial infection or pneumonia that might require specific treatments.
