what are the symptoms for dengue - #24215

Aarav

I am really worried about something that’s been going on lately. A few days ago, I came back from a trip to a tropical area and I started feeling really off. At first, it was just a headache and some muscle pain that I thought was jet lag or maybe from all the hiking we did. But then I started getting this really high fever, like 102°F!! I was sweating buckets, and my joints hurt like crazy. Just last night, I noticed some rash appearing on my arms and legs, which freaked me out more. I've read about dengue fever online, and now I'm questioning if I should go see a doctor. What are the symptoms for dengue actually? I mean, I’ve been feeling super fatigued and even had some nausea today—like, can too much fatigue be a symptom? And what about things like bleeding gums? I've heard about that relating to dengue also. Do I need to be really concerned? How do you even tell if it’s just a flu or something more serious? I really don’t know how long these symptoms are supposed to last or what the next steps should be. Can someone help with clarity on what are the symptoms for dengue, please? I could really use some guidance right now!!

Doctors' responses

Dengue fever often begins with a sudden high fever, commonly accompanied by severe headaches and pain behind the eyes. Muscle and joint pain, often referred to as “breakbone fever,” is quite notorious in dengue infections, so the symptoms you described align with this. Fatigue and nausea are indeed consistent with what patients experience, and the onset of a rash—usually appearing 2-5 days after the fever—fits into the classical presentation as well. A dengue rash can appear first on the limbs and chest before spreading to the rest of the body. Regarding bleeding gums, mild bleeding tendencies such as nose or gum bleeding are possible and can indicate the disease’s severity moving into what’s called the ‘critical phase’ of dengue. It’s important to check for warning signs like bleeding, severe abdominal pain, continuous vomiting, or any signs of plasma leakage like difficulty breathing, as these require urgent medical intervention. Since you’re experiencing a high fever, severe muscle pain, and a rash following recent exposure in a tropical area, please see a healthcare provider as soon as possible. Diagnostic tests, such as dengue NS1 antigen or IgM antibodies, are crucial for confirming the presence of the virus, differentiating it from flu or other tropical illnesses, and should be done promptly for accurate diagnosis. Managing dengue primarily involves supportive care: hydration is critical, keeping fever in check with paracetamol (avoid aspirin or ibuprofen due to bleeding risks), and continuous monitoring for any escalation in symptoms. Since the severity can rapidly change, you’d be advised to get assessed and monitored by a medical professional to ensure safety and to preempt any severe complications.
