my husband has hepatitis b can i get it - #25385
I am really worried because my husband has hepatitis b and I keep wondering can I get it. We've been together for years and he was diagnosed a few months ago, and it's honestly been a lot to handle. He takes medication, and the doctor said he's on treatment, but I'm not sure what that means for me. We share everything, and sometimes he forgets to be extra careful — like, he doesn’t always cover a small cut on his hand before doing stuff around the house like washing dishes. Is it true that it can spread through saliva or just touching surfaces? I just can’t shake this feeling that I might catch it. When we talked about it, he seems to think I won't but I keep reading mixed things online. Like, I read that it’s possible to get it through unprotected sex and sharing razors but we use the same toothbrush sometimes, too. Can I get it from that? I don't want to scare him or make him feel bad, but I feel like I need more info! What are the actual risks and what should I be doing to protect myself? I just don’t wanna end up with this too, you know?

Hepatitis B can indeed be transmitted through various means, primarily via blood, semen, and other body fluids, so your concern is understandable. You’re correct in noting that hepatitis B can be spread through unprotected sex and by sharing items like razors, due to potential blood exposure. Sharing toothbrushes could also be a potential risk if there’s blood present, as the virus is much more contagious than some others like the hepatitis C virus or HIV. However, casual contact (such as hugging, holding hands, or sharing food and utensils) doesn’t transmit the virus. Hepatitis B rarely spreads through saliva unless it contains blood, so things like sharing dishes or using the same restroom usually aren’t an issue. It’s great that your husband is on treatment, which significantly reduces his viral load and transmission risk. For your safety, ensure you are vaccinated against hepatitis B if you haven’t been already — the vaccination is quite effective in providing long-term protection. Using protection during sex and avoiding sharing personal items that might have traces of blood can be smart precautions. In terms of small household cuts, it’s advisable for him to keep them covered to minimize any minimal risk there. I recommend getting tested if you’ve had regular potential exposure, for peace of mind and to manage any issues early on. Lastly, open communication with your healthcare provider will give you personalized guidance, especially if there are any underlying health concerns or if you’re considering future pregnancies, as well.
