after applying henna on hair how to wash - #24424

Arjun

I am seriously confused about how to wash my hair after applying henna, and I hope someone can help me with this! Last week, I decided to try out this new henna treatment I've heard so much about for my dry, frizzy hair. The process was super fun, but now that I've got this rich reddish-brown color, I'm worried about what comes next! I’ve looked up different methods on washing it out but they all say different stuff. Like, do I just rinse my hair with plain water or do I need to use a special shampoo? And how soon should I wash my hair after applying henna? I don’t wanna mess this up and lose the color! My friend said something about not using shampoo for a few days after applying henna 'cause it might strip the color away, but how long is too long? I also feel like there's a lot of oils and residue left in my hair, which makes me a bit anxious. Should I just be washing it with only conditioner? After applying henna on hair, how to wash it without ruining the color? I've got this whole Pinterest board of ideas, but they all seem contradictory. Please help me out!

Doctors' responses

After applying henna, it’s best to start by rinsing your hair thoroughly with plain lukewarm water until the water runs clear. This ensures you remove any residue while preserving the color. Generally, it’s advised to avoid shampoo the first 24 to 48 hours after henna application to let the dye fully set and prevent stripping away the color. During this period, the dye continues to oxidize and deepen, and shampooing too soon might interrupt that process. If you feel there’s too much residue, you can use a light conditioner to help rinse out any excess without disrupting the fresh color. Massage it gently into your scalp and hair, then rinse thoroughly again. After the initial 48-hour settling period, you can return to your regular hair washing routine, but consider opting for sulfate-free or gentle shampoos to better preserve the color over time. Avoid hot water, as it can further dry the hair and fade the dye faster. Additionally, conditioning treatments can be beneficial here, as they help maintain moisture balance without altering the henna color. As for oils, applying them before washing might help with removing extra residue, just ensure to rinse them out well. It’s also worth considering that henna interacts uniquely with every person’s hair texture and porosity, so minor adjustments might be necessary to find what works best for you.
