why is hair serum used - #24698
I am really confused about this whole hair care thing! Last week I was at the salon, and the stylist kept raving about how amazing hair serum is. Like, why is hair serum used? She said it does wonders for your hair, but honestly, I didn’t get a clear answer. I keep seeing my friends post about their hair serum on IG, but I just don’tknow what it even does! My hair is super frizzy and dry from all the coloring, and I’m tempted to try it but wondering, why is hair serum used? Does it really help with smoothing? And like, how am I supposed to apply it? I've heard from a few people you put it on damp hair, but what about dry hair? Is there a difference on how it's used? Also, if it’s supposed to be good, why is hair serum used specifically for certain hair types? Mine is wavy and crazy, what if it makes it worse? And is there even a point in using it if my shampoo is already supposed to do a lot? I just want to know if I should invest in some hair serum or if it’s just a gimmick. Anyone have thoughts on this?

Hair serum is primarily used to address issues like frizz, dryness, and to add shine and smoothness to the hair. It’s designed to coat the surface of the hair with a protective layer that helps to smoothen the cuticle, which can lead to a sleeker, shinier appearance. This can be especially beneficial for frizzy or dry hair, something that seems relevant to your situation with colored hair. The silicone or oil-based ingredients typically found in serums are what help to manage these issues. When it comes to application, you can usually apply hair serum to damp hair before styling, which can help with detangling and protecting the hair from heat-based styling tools. It’s like a barrier that minimizes damage, reduces frizz, and adds that much-needed gloss. If you apply it on dry hair, it can still be effective, but the key is to use sparingly to avoid any greasy look.
As for specific hair types, certain serums cater more to curly hair while others are for straight or chemically treated hair. It’s worth looking at the labels to see what they offer for your particular hair needs—such as hydration for dry hair or lightweight serums for finer textures. Regarding your question about shampoo, while shampoo cleanses the hair and removes dirt and oils, serum acts more like a finishing step to enhance the look and feel of the hair. Shampoos typically don’t provide long-lasting protective effects against styling or environmental factors like humidity. If your hair is particularly wavy and frizzy, you’ll likely benefit from serum’s smoothing properties, but as with any new product, trying it out in small amounts might be a good start to see how your hair reacts. Be sure to avoid excessive application as too much product can weigh down the hair, which could counteract the benefits it’s supposed to provide.
