how to use multani mitti for hair straightening - #25263

Aditi

I am really struggling with my hair lately. It’s super frizzy and wavy, and I don’t want to keep using heat every day to straighten it out. A friend mentioned something about using multani mitti for hair straightening, but I have no clue how to use multani mitti for hair straightening properly. I tried mixing it with water but didn’t see much difference. I watched a video where someone mixed it with yogurt and some essential oil, and that seemed to work for them, but I wonder if I should do something different? Like, what ratio of multani mitti to yogurt is best? Do I leave it on for like an hour or just a few minutes? And does anyone know if it's okay to use it once a week or is that too much? I mean, I just want a simple way to get smooth hair without fuss, you know? Could I mix other stuff with it too, like coconut oil or something? I just really wanna understand how to use multani mitti for hair straightening without messing it up more! Any tips would help so much!

Multani mitti, also known as Fuller’s Earth, can be indeed used in attempts to smoothen hair, though it won’t provide the same level of straightening as heat treatments or chemical products might. It’s more about reducing frizz and improving manageability. To create a multani mitti hair mask that can help, you might try mixing two to three tablespoons of multani mitti with around half a cup of yogurt. This combo not only makes application easier but can provide a bit of conditioning due to the yogurt. You can also add a few drops of essential oil or a teaspoon of coconut oil if you wish for additional moisture. To apply, make sure your hair is damp, then section it to aid in even application. Use your fingers or a brush to coat your hair, focusing mostly on the lengths and tips of your hair rather than the roots, as this can weigh down your roots and potentially cause scalp issues if overused.

After application, leave the mask on for about 20–30 minutes. It’s generally not necessary to leave it for an extended period, as the clay can become quite difficult to wash out if left too long. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water and follow up with your regular conditioner if needed. Using this treatment once a week should not be excessive for most hair types, but if you experience dryness or irritation, it may be worth adjusting the frequency or consulting a dermatologist.

It’s important to note that while multani mitti can help to some extent, tilting more towards smoother hair as part of an overall care routine rather than expecting excessively dramatic changes. Also, be cautious about mixing too many products, like coconut oil, until you understand how your hair responds to each element individually. Avoid the temptation to add too many different oils or ingredients at once, as this can weigh hair down or complicate rinsing the mask out fully. Addressing the underlying cause of frizz, such as reducing heat use, ensuring adequate hydration, using sulfate-free products, and protecting hair from the sun or environmental damage, might also be beneficial in your overall hair care strategy.
