does gabapentin make you sleepy

Aditi

I am wondering about this whole thing with gabapentin cause I recently started taking it for my nerve pain, but I am always feeling super drowsy! Like, does gabapentin make you sleepy? I wake up, have my coffee, but by mid-morning, I can barely keep my eyes open. I systemically took it at night at first, but my doc said it should be fine to take during the day too since it’s supposed to help with my condition, right? However, it feels like it's making me more tired than the pain! I mean, I wasn’t a zombie before starting this, but now I’m just dragging. The first few days were rough with side effects and everything, but now it kinda feels constant? It's confusing because some people online say gabapentin should help with sleep issues, and then others ask, "does gabapentin make you sleepy," like it’s some magical thing that layers more drowsiness on you. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to just get used to it or if I should mention this to my doctor. Could the dose be too high, or is this just what I have to deal with? Just trying to figure out if others have the same experience, ya know?

Doctors' responses

Gabapentin can indeed make you feel sleepy, as drowsiness is a common side effect. It affects the way nerves send messages to your brain, part of how it works to relieve nerve pain. Besides, it might take some time for your body to adjust to it. You’re not alone in experiencing this—it’s something a number of people on gabapentin report, and it can be a bit frustrating when it interferes with daily life. While some get used to it over time, if this side effect is bothersome, particularly affecting your day-to-day activities, it’s worth discussing with your doctor. The dosage you’re on might be too high for you right now or you may need a slower titration schedule. Your doctor could consider an adjustment or even possibly changing the timing of dosage—maybe taking a larger portion at night if it’s feasible for your treatment. It’s important not to make changes without medical guidance, as gabapentin requires cautious management, and sudden cessation can lead to withdrawal symptoms. Also, they might check for interactions with other medications or underlying issues that could exacerbate the drowsiness. Meanwhile, try to maintain stable, predictable patterns in sleep and daily activity to help your body adapt more effectively. Of course, if you experience more severe side effects like difficulty breathing or swelling, seek medical attention immediately. However, if the main concern is ongoing drowsiness, addressing it with your doctor is the best step to take.
