how to lose weight with hypothyroidism

Shivansh

I am really struggling with how to lose weight with hypothyroidism. For the past year, I've been feeling super tired all the time, my doctor did some tests, and guess what? Yup, my thyroid levels are off. I'm on medication now, but the weight just isn’t budging! I tried cutting down calories, but I don’t feel like I’m eating anything at all, and still no change. I used to love running and working out, but lately, the energy just isn't there, and honestly, it’s frustrating! I've done some research on how to lose weight with hypothyroidism, but most articles just talk about diet and exercise like it’s easy, ya know? I've also heard that stress can make it worse, but with everything happening in life, stress is pretty unavoidable! How do people really tackle this? Has anyone else figured out how to lose weight with hypothyroidism effectively? I’ve been thinking about trying different foods, but I get overwhelmed really quick and wonder if they’re even worth it. Should I focus more on my diet, or is it about exercise, or a mix of both? Any tips from anyone who's been in the same boat would be super helpful!

Doctors' responses

Losing weight with hypothyroidism can indeed be challenging, especially with the fatigue and other symptoms that often accompany it. Since you’re on medication, ensuring your thyroid levels are stable and routinely monitored is crucial as an optimal thyroid hormone level is fundamental for metabolism. You’ve done well experimenting with caloric reduction, but it’s important to find a sustainable balance that doesn’t leave you feeling deprived or nutritionally deficient. Instead of focusing solely on calories, prioritize a balanced diet rich in whole foods. Incorporate proteins, healthy fats, and high-fiber carbohydrates from sources like lean meats, avocados, nuts, whole grains, and plenty of vegetables to help you feel fuller longer and maintain blood sugar levels. As for exercise, start with manageable low-impact activities like walking or gentle yoga to gradually build up your stamina without overwhelming your body. Even short, consistent routines can be effective if you’re consistent. Regarding stress, while it’s hard to eliminate, incorporating relaxation techniques like meditation or deep breathing exercises might help mitigate its impact on your body. Finally, patience is key. Weight loss can be slow with hypothyroidism, so give yourself grace and focus on incremental health improvements rather than just the scale. If you’re still struggling or feeling unwell, a consultation with a dietitian familiar with hypothyroidism could provide additional personalized guidance. Be sure to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider, as they can evaluate whether your medication or treatment plan needs any adjustments.
