does neuropathy go away - #26378

Reet

I am really trying to wrap my head around this whole neuropathy thing. For the last six months, I’ve been dealing with these crazy tingling and numbing feelings in my feet, and some days it feels like there’s just no way to get rid of it. I talked to my doc a little while ago and they said it might be neuropathy, which honestly freaked me out. They said it’s often caused by diabetes or nerve damage but I don’t have diabetes as far as I know! Anyway, I have started taking some supplements and doing these nerve exercises I found online. Sometimes I wonder, does neuropathy go away? I read mixed stuff online, like some people say it can go away after addressing the underlying issues, while others mention it’s chronic. Like, do you guys think the nerve exercises would even help? Or should I be more aggressive with alternative treatments? It’s just really frustrating not knowing if does neuropathy go away or if I’ll be stuck with this forever. Do most people find it gets better with time, or is this just my new normal? I’m hopeful but also kinda scared about what this means for my future. Any insight would help!

Doctors' responses

Neuropathy can be a complex and frustrating condition for sure, and whether it goes away often depends on the underlying cause. Since you mentioned you don’t have diabetes, there are still various other potential causes like vitamin deficiencies, medication side effects, alcohol use, or other systemic issues that your doctor may need to rule out. If an underlying cause is identified and effectively treated, the symptoms can indeed improve or even resolve entirely. However, there are cases where it can be chronic, particularly if it’s related to ongoing issues or damage that can’t be easily reversed. Hopefully the nerve exercises and supplements you’re trying can offer some benefit—certain exercises can help improve nerve health and function, and some supplements like B vitamins have been shown to support nerve health. Doing exercises tailored for nerve health can enhance circulation and maintain muscle strength, which might help reduce symptoms. Just be cautious about adopting new treatments without professional advice, especially alternative therapies that aren’t scientifically validated. Keep communicating with your doctor about your symptoms and any changes you notice, as tracking this can help tailor your treatment plan. Discussing more aggressive treatment options might be an option if your symptoms persist or worsen. The next step may involve additional diagnostic tests or consulting a specialist to get a more comprehensive look into other possible causes of your neuropathy.
