19M. For 2 years I’ve had fluctuating concentration after stress/depression period. Some days I solve difficult problems easily, other times I struggle with simple ones. Sleep around 7 hours. No caffeine for 1 year. Currently taking omega 3 and brahmi. No weakness, seizures, speech problems, or fainting. Does this sound neurological or stress/sleep related?

- More than 1 year

How would you rate the severity of your concentration problems?:

How is your sleep quality on average?:

Dr. Bharat Joshi
I’m a periodontist and academician with a strong clinical and teaching background. Over the last 4 years and 8 months, I’ve been actively involved in dental education, guiding students at multiple levels including dental hygienist, BDS, and MDS programs. Currently, I serve as a Reader at MMCDSR in Ambala, Haryana—a role that allows me to merge my academic passion with hands-on experience. Clinically, I’ve been practicing dentistry for the past 12 years. From routine procedures like scaling and root planing to more advanced cases involving grafts, biopsies, and implant surgeries. Honestly, I still find joy in doing a simple RCT when it’s needed. It’s not just about the procedure but making sure the patient feels comfortable and safe. Academically, I have 26 research publications to my credit. I’m on the editorial boards of the Archives of Dental Research and Journal of Dental Research and Oral Health, and I’ve spent a lot of time reviewing manuscripts—from case reports to meta-analyses and even book reviews. I was honored to receive the “Best Editor” award by Innovative Publications, and Athena Publications recognized me as an “excellent reviewer,” which honestly came as a bit of a surprise! In 2025, I had the opportunity to present a guest lecture in Italy on traumatic oral lesions. Sharing my work and learning from peers globally has been incredibly fulfilling. Outside academics and clinics, I’ve also worked in the pharmaceutical sector as a Drug Safety Associate for about 3 years, focusing on pharmacovigilance. That role really sharpened my attention to detail and deepened my understanding of drug interactions and adverse effects. My goal is to keep learning, and give every patient and student my absolute best.

Fluctuating concentration in your case could definitely be rooted in stress and sleep patterns rather than being strictly neurological. Stress and depression can significantly affect concentration and cognitive function by altering the way your brain processes information. Since you’re able to solve difficult problems some days but struggle on simple ones at other times, it seems like your cognitive function is intact but inconsistent, which is common after periods of significant stress or mental health strain. Sleep is another critical factor; getting 7 hours is on the lower end for many your age, where 8-9 hours is often recommended. You might consider aiming for slightly more rest to see if this improves consistency in your concentration. Also, regarding supplements, omega-3 can be beneficial for brain health, though evidence for brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) is less robust but used traditionally for cognitive support. It’s important to maintain healthy stress management practices such as regular physical activity, mindfulness, or meditation, as these could have a direct impact on your concentration fluctuations. If the issue persists despite trying these adjustments, or if your symptoms worsen, it might be worthwhile to consult with a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. They can rule out or address any underlying issues that might require specific treatments. Remember, it’s also about how these factors interact uniquely in your life, so any approach is best tailored to your ongoing needs and lifestyle.
