what vitamins are good for neuropathy in the feet

Sara

I am really struggling with some intense weirdness in my feet and I can’t shake the feeling that it's something serious. A few months ago, I started having this numbness and tingling, like little pins and needles poking at me constantly! Initially, I thought it was just from sitting weirdly or maybe I needed new shoes. But it keeps coming back more and more, especially at night, making it super hard to sleep. I went to the doc last week, and they mentioned neuropathy but didn’t really dive deeper into it. They asked me about my diet and what vitamins I take, and that got me thinking... what vitamins are good for neuropathy in the feet? I've heard stuff about B vitamins being helpful, like B12, but are there others that can help too? Are there specific dosages I should look for? I’ve been trying to eat better, but is it enough? I get confused with all the different info out there! Also, how long does it take to notice improvements if I start taking these vitamins? Like, do I have to wait months or can I feel something sooner? I wish I could just figure this out already.

If you’re dealing with neuropathy in your feet, exploring the role of vitamins is definitely a smart move. Vitamin B12 is indeed one of the primary vitamins associated with neuropathy, especially if a deficiency is suspected. It helps maintain healthy nerve cells and a deficiency can contribute to nerve damage. A common dosage for B12 supplementation might range from 500 micrograms to 1000 micrograms (or more) per day, but it’s always a good idea to consult your doctor or a nutritionist to tailor this to your needs. In addition to B12, other B vitamins, like B1 (thiamine) and B6 (pyridoxine), are essential. Thiamine is key for nerve function. For thiamine, a daily dose might be around 100 mg, and for B6, doses over 100 mg daily are typically avoided due to risk of nerve damage when taken excessively for prolonged periods. Again, consult a healthcare professional to find the right balance as it’s crucial not to overdo it. Beyond B vitamins, vitamin D and alpha-lipoic acid, an antioxidant, have been studied for their potential benefits in neuropathy. Vitamin D helps with nerve health, and while specific dosage can vary, general recommendations often hover around 600-800 IU per day. As for alpha-lipoic acid, doses can range from 600-1200 mg per day. It’s important to ensure that these are taken under guidance to avoid interactions or side effects. Your question on how long it takes to notice improvements can vary widely among individuals. Some may feel subtle changes within weeks, but more substantial relief might take a few months. It’s also worth looking at your overall lifestyle, including managing blood sugar levels, if diabetes might be a concern, and potentially seeking physical therapy or medications if needed. Always loop back with your healthcare provider to closely monitor and adjust as necessary.
