open pores skin care routine - #27205
I am really frustrated with my skin lately. I've always struggled with open pores, and it just seems like no matter what I do, they get worse! I've tried all sorts of products, from exfoliators to serums, but honestly nothing seems to really help. Sometimes I feel like I'm just making my skin worse. A few weeks ago, I visited a dermatologist who mentioned an open pores skin care routine might help, but I felt overwhelmed and lost after all the info he threw at me. I'm not sure where to start. Like, does anyone really have a solid open pores skin care routine that actually works? I’ve read that keeping my face clean is key, but should I be using toner? And how often should I exfoliate in my open pores skin care routine? I’ve done masks in the past but I’m worried those might actually clog my pores more than anything. Any do’s or don'ts to keep in mind? I’d love some personal experiences or even your go-to open pores skin care routine, if you have one! Just want to get this sorted and feel better about my skin, any help would be amazing!

Doctors' responses
Open pores can certainly be frustrating, but a solid skincare routine can help manage the appearance and prevent them from worsening. When it comes to open pores, keeping your face clean is crucial, yes, but there are specifics to be mindful of. Start with a gentle cleanser suitable for your skin type. Gel-based cleansers tend to work well for oily or combination skin because they help remove excess oil without over-drying. For dry skin, look for a hydrating cleanser. About toners, they can be beneficial, especially if they contain ingredients like salicylic acid or witch hazel, which help with oil control and pore tightening effects. Apply toner after cleansing and before any serums or moisturizers.
Exfoliating is important, but moderation is key. Over-exfoliating can irritate the skin and make pores appear larger. Aim to exfoliate no more than twice a week, using either a chemical exfoliant like alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) which gently remove dead skin cells, or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) that penetrate oils in pores. Masks can be useful, particularly clay masks which can draw out impurities from your pores. Use masks once a week and avoid overly drying masks to maintain balance in your skin’s moisture.
Incorporate non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores) moisturizers daily. Keeping your skin hydrated helps prevent oil production from overcompensating for dryness. If you wear make-up, opt for products labeled ‘matte’ to reduce the appearance of pores and ensure thorough removal at the end of the day. Sunscreen is a must to protect against UV damage which can exacerbate pore issues, choose an oil-free formula.
Don’t neglect a patch test when trying new products to avoid a reaction that could worsen pore issues. Ultimately, individual response to products can vary greatly, so it may take a bit of trial to find what suits you best. If problems persist or become bothersome, regular follow-ups with a dermatologist could offer more personalized guidance.
